Report RSS Using Game Maker Is Hard

Posted by on

If you've been reading the blog for a while, you'd know that about 3 or so months ago, I switched from using Game Maker to Flash. Overall, learning Actionscript has been fairly easy. A lot of the tricks and tips that I've learned from Game Maker have translated fairly easily to using Actionscript.

One thing that I enjoyed doing in Flash was creating a level editor. I've never built one before as Game Maker comes equipped with one already. Since the Game Maker level editor is fairly robust, there really was never any need for me to make my own.

As it turns out, creating a level editor is fairly easy. And, I probably would have learned a lot making one. More importantly, a lot of the room functions in Game Maker act a little wonky, and it probably would have helped me out to just create rooms myself. You live and you learn though...

In order to save myself time, I decided to use Game Maker to edit an xml file into a text file. Yes, I know that I can do it in Flash, but that would have required me to do some playing around with PHP and stuff. I'm not that interested in fooling around with that stuff again...

In any case, I figured that using Game Maker would be a little strange since I haven't touched Game Maker since using Flash. Good golly was I wrong. It was practically like I didn't know anything about it...

I'm absolutely flabbergasted at how little I remember of Game Maker. It took me forever just to get started.

Luckily, I was able to finish what I needed to do and now have a nifty little file converter.

It sort of gets me thinking that, as soon as the next game is finished, I should quickly move on to the next language. Seems like Adobe is taking some rough hits from Apple, and I might need to step up to HTML 5 or something along those lines. The sooner the better...
