So on the occasional times that we watch tv, there are only a handful of shows that we watch on a regular basis. Admittadly, neither of us is a huge TV person (there something about the never ending ness that we find a bit annoying). One of our favorite shows, however, is the uber nerdish, Star Trek the Next Generation.
The other day we were watching a couple of episodes on DVD and we got to thinking about what made the show great (coincidentally we were getting pretty smashed at the time). Was it...
the great story lines?
Interesting characters?
Fantastic special effects?
The fact is that we really couldn't come up with a definitive answer. You know, being an observer of art is SO easy, it's difficult to imagine how much work it takes to make something GREAT (or even GOOD).
Becoming designers in the past year or so has really driven home that fact to us. It's quite tough to make great stuff! Shit just doesn't go exactly as you plan. The flow of what you're trying to do is interrupted by new ideas and what not.
It would be nice if you could take all of the elements that made something great, throw them in a blender, and create something fantastic. Obviously life doesn't work like that, but it's still fun to analyze and dissect art (it's what makes us human after all...).
Getting back to the point, however, Star Trek the Next Generation is awesome.
I guess, that's really all that needs to be said...
