Report RSS So yeah, I used to make crappy Flash games - Part 1

Posted by on

It feels like I haven't made a game in years. Because, well, that's true. At uni I used to make loads, using my favourite software Macromedia Flash (NOT Adobe Flash. Adobe ruined it in my opinion!). I made silly stuff really, things that made me and my friends laugh.

Flash was great, it had everything, a built-in graphics editor, a timeline for animation, and a simple code editor that was simple to start you off, and just good enough to get semi-advanced. Perfect for me anyway. But then I stopped, work got in the way, then there was the announcement that Flash wouldn't be supported on mobile devices and it seemed redundant trying to go back.

But I miss it. I'd been away for years, nearing 10 years I suppose but I've got the itch to go back. To make... something new.

I likely won't return to Flash, although their new export to HTML5 canvas does seem good. And writing in JavaScript rather than ActionScript seems a sensible move. But it just doesn't have the support and community that I need (feel free to prove me wrong in the comments guys & gals!).
I've been investigating Unity3D, and am sticking with that for now. It's far from Flash, but does have everything integrated into one software package which I quite like. If I progress I'll post my work here.

Some Flash games I've made:

Blue Midget Stalker - Many of my games involve spaceships from Red Dwarf, which I'm quite obsessed with. For over 14 years I've been writing Red Dwarf fanfiction with friends. I know it sounds geeky. But it's smegging epic, alright?

Parotts bar - I coded this with a friend at uni. I did the graphics, and I still like the style I came up with.

Continue to article 2 where there's more links to games I've made & what I'm hoping to do next.
