Report RSS Okay so I think I got carried away making assets

Posted by on

Instead of making a game (specifically the fun game in my head) I've got hooked on playing another game, which is called "creating assets and uploading them to Turbosquid", which is a lot of hard work, but I actually quite enjoy it. I think I like this more than actually making a game itself, which is probably why I'm doing it.

The long-project syndrome

I know that making a game will take a long time, and there'll be a long delay between starting and releasing something, and I can't take the pressure of that sort of long-term project. I've abandoned so many in the past. Completely unintentiaonally, but I'll go on holiday or get distracted in some way, and then just lose all the focus on whatever project I was working on. At least with creating assets I know that it'll take a couple of hours, and I can upload it, then bam. Project done, onto the next. Feel productive!

Unity asset store

As well as uploading to Turbosquid (you can see my items here - link - including the picture above) I've also experimented uploading to the Unity asset store. Unity is the game framework I've been learning recently and I'm going to stick with it purely because it gives a lot of options. You can make 3D or 2D games, and code in Javascript which I'm familiar with. It means I can use these 3D assets I've created.
I did for a time want to make a game using Construct 2, a great HTML5 game-creator, but not being able to touch the code really bugged me.
So anyway I've uploaded 2 things so far, which haven't yet been accepted. The first was a low poly car (see below), which was declined after a week (I think it takes so long because they have a lot of submissions to look through).

The feedback they gave me was good though, and so I made some changes and resubmitted. I'm glad they took the time to explain exactly what was wrong. I needed to combine all objects with the same texture. So the front and rear bumper, the steering wheel and the interior are all the same grey texture and I'd left them as separate objects instead of combining. They helpfully explained that combining those would make the model better for games and render faster.

The 2nd asset I uploaded to unity was a pack of all the buildings I'd created recently (see below). Not had any feedback on this one yet, so I'll wait and see!
