I am a rookie modder looking for help and advice. I have several dream projects such as a mod for Freespace 2 that will allow you to leave the cockpit and sabotage an enemy ship. That is way down the road and I just want to make new friends and pick up some new tips and tricks.

Report RSS Story vs. Gameplay

Ah, that age old debate. Which is more important. Story or gameplay? I am the old guy who sits in the back of the room laughing as the two children fight, because really, they both compliment each other quite nicely.

If your gameplay sucks then no one gives a damn about the story. If the story sucks, no one will be driven to accomplish the game's goals (most of the time). I think you need great gameplay with a healthy dose of story. But in the end which is more important?

Truth be told, gameplay is more important. Don't bite my head off. I appreciate story more than gameplay, but really if your story sucks, people will still play a game with great gameplay rather than a game with great story but shit gameplay.

Just because I think this and many do, doesn't mean you should skimp out on the story. Think of story as the icing on the cake. The perfect bonus prize. To many games know that the gameplay is awesome so they abandon all hope on story.

Games like Ocarina of Time, Half Life 2, and Portal 2 have both great gameplay and story, but usually with games this is not the case. Don't get me wrong, I love Halo and some of the CoD games, but they have the most generic stories possible. Halo you are Master Queef and you must use yur leet skillz to beetz the alians. CoD games you are Soap Mactavish and you must use yur leet skillz to beetz the comies.

So what I'm trying to get across here young boys and girls...just because you have OMG worthy gameplay, does not mean you do not need the story.
