Opening concepts have been created for our Half Life 2 modification, Freedom. After much discussion, we have confirmed the basic premise for the game.Freedom follows Michael and Daniel, two young members of the rebellion, some time before the events of Half Life 2. The story follows their escape from City 34, a well-kept urban center, to the sewers and outlands of the city.
The originality found in the basic premise is that the game will be centered on dramatic and emotional character relationships, detailed and sprawling maps, and an overarching sense of realism.
For example, we have worked out a basic "hunger/thirst" system that is based on energy. We hope to expand the system, in the future, to include further options such as scavenging, starting fires, and boiling dirty water. A realistic damage system is also being planned, only allowing players a few bulletshots before beginning to bleed out, which they must then attempt to heal with any items they can find.
As such, although the game has a generic FPS scenario, it will focus on dynamic, progressive characters, a sense of fear, survival and strategic combat, and a real-time strategy element involving cooperating with your AI squadmates. We hope Freedom will lay the path for a new standard of dramatic entertainment in the future.
