Fullmetal Alchemist is a fantasy manga set in the early twentieth century in a country called Amestris . In this imaginary world , alchemy is the science and practice closer to the magic that allows you to transmute a matter changing the structure (according to the law of equivalent exchange ) through the use of an alchemical circle . This allows the alchemist , for example, to adjust an object if you have all the pieces and if you know the structure of the object , or deform others (even floors or walls ), or , destroy or melt them . The best alchemists have the opportunity to participate in an examination before joining the army, with the title of the alchemists of Stato.Edward and Alphonse Elric were children living in a country village called Resembool . The boys' father Hohenheim ( Hohenheim of Light in the anime and Van Hohenheim in the manga ) , an extraordinary alchemist , had left home when Edward was very young and Alphonse was practically a baby. Years later, the boys' mother , Trisha Elric , died of a serious illness. After his death , Edward and Alphonse lived with Winry and her grandmother until he found a teacher of alchemy. After completing the training imposed by the latter, they returned home with the intention of reviving the dead mother through the alchemical circle that they had found among his father's notes . Their attempt failed and , instead of reviving the mother's body , appears a shapeless heap of flesh and bones , created at the cost of Edward 's left leg and Alphonse's entire body . In a desperate attempt to save his brother , Edward sacrificed his right arm to bind Al 's soul to a suit of armor . The arm and leg Edward were replaced by two mechanical limbs called automail . In the original Japanese version , the term " Fullmetal " ( translated in Italian with Steel and adaptations made in the original hagane ) is used to describe a person stubborn and obstinate . In the sixth volume of the manga, as in the eighth episode of 2003 , it is revealed that when an alchemist becomes a State Alchemist , he was awarded a title , Edward was awarded the title of " Fullmetal " thus making it become " Fullmetal Alchemist " ( in Italian Alchemist steel ) . called A State Alchemist Roy Mustang came after the failed human transmutation of Ed and Al Realising the skill of Edward, Mustang suggested that the best way for the two boys to reach their goal was to become State Alchemists and work for him. Spurred on by the proposal of man, Edward made a mental note to become a State Alchemist so he can take advantage of the resources available to State Alchemists and find a way to recover what he and Alphonse had lost . Eventually , the two brothers came to the attention of the philosopher's stone and began to look for sure that would make him recover their bodies. Continuing their research came to know secrets about the Philosopher's Stone that would never have wanted to find out , they decided , as well , to try to regain their bodies without having to resort to stone.
Main Characters Edward ElricEdward Elric ( the alchemist steel ), nicknamed Ed, is the protagonist possesses an arm and a leg prosthetic made of automail .
