Super Crate Box is coming to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list. Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it's time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with interesting, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack.

Super Crate Box is a fun game in which you can put a surprising amount of hours, simply due to its difficulty. With only 3 stages, 3 game modes and 6 kinds of enemies (3 of which are simply faster versions of the first three), one wouldn't expect so much replay-ability. However, one should keep in mind the power of a dozen different weapons.

The goal of the game is to grab a new weapon as quickly as possible, without dying. One touch by an enemy and you're gone. This results in a very varied experience, as every weapon needs its own strategy. You never know what you'll end up with next, be it a bazooka, katana or landmine.

What is interesting is how well balanced these weapons are. Though there might be a few favorites (among which the aforementioned bazooka), none of the weapons ever feel useless. Because of this, it is a joy to keep playing and get some experience with each weapon.

The second two game modes, however, are rather chaotic. Once unlocked, you'll find yourself dying as much as in Meat Boy. This game is hard, and to unlock everything, you'll have to get good and get lucky.

A blast to play... But nevertheless a really tiny game. Besides weaponry, it is lacking variation. To say that that is a bad thing though...

Super Crate Box isn't a masterpiece, but it is exactly what it needs to be: A small, quick, fun game to play when you haven't really got anything to do, such as when sitting in a train or waiting for class to start. It's fun! That's it.
