Mysterious Space was initially created for the 7DRL challenge of 2014. The competition version was much different, featuring one-dimensional levels that the player was forced to advance through at a fixed speed, like traditional games of the arcade shooter genre. Only near the end of the competition did I realize that while I had captured some important Rogue-ness, I had missed out on an important aspect of Rogue-likes: exploration! So I've continued to work on the game, far past the 7DRL challenge, to address this and add other features :) The version available here is ultimately a very different game, with large, "fully 2D" (lol) levels the player can explore; more weapons, shields, and armor; much-more interesting enemies (inspired, in part, by a super-old Mac game called Crystal Quest); and completely different in-level goals. I believe the game is now much more worthy of calling itself a "Rogue-like" than it was at the end of the 7DRL challenge!
