The year is 2029, and mechanically augmented humans have now been deemed outcasts, living a life of complete and total segregation from the rest of society.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided launched last month, and though its plot focuses heavily on body augmentation and even features some entirely virtual game locations, it doesn’t feature even a tiny bit of virtual reality content.

In a new interview with Finder, Mankind Divided’s executive producer Olivier Proulx expands on why that is the case, and whether or not Deus Ex and VR will cross paths in the future:

“I think every developer is at least curious about VR so yeah, sometimes we do talk about it. But we never thought about just slapping this game on VR. Just the technical requirements to run this thing at 60fps on two displays would be completely insane. You would need a great rig. Though, as we were working on the PC version and thinking about how we can showcase some of the detailed environments we build, we thought, ‘hey, why not just see what happens if you have a great rig and you put the player in a virtual reality environment.’ Maybe in Jensen's apartment, or in other cool locations that we've developed in the game.”

Proulx goes on to say that the team was interested in supporting virtual reality for the game’s benchmarking tool, which is exclusive to Mankind Divided’s PC version. However, as the game was also being developed for non-VR consoles, VR simply wasn’t a focus. He continues:

“I think that, for VR, it's going to go where the content will take it, and I think that it's not about just putting a triple-A game there - I think we'll have to have content that's adapted to that platform ... To really craft experiences that makes sense for the VR experience.”

Mankind Divided does contain a 3D Stereoscopic setting, however, and some users have managed to tweak it to work with an Oculus Rift – though it’s not exactly true VR support.
