Weapon System

Assault Rifle Assembly

So now that we can finally spill the beans on some of the things that have been going on here at the office, we thought it would be nice to write about the weapon system we have planned for Astral. This is one of the things that we are really excited to test out and see what the players can come up with. Even though we can’t really get too much into details this early on, we would like to share the essence of how the weapon system in Astral will work.

Customization

All the weapons in Astral will be fully customizable. The player will be able to find or craft weapon frames that can be modified with different types of barrels, cores and melee attachments (bayonets etc..). What type of parts you use to assemble your weapon will influence the characteristics of it greatly. This is so that every player can experiment with different parts to find what suits their play style the best.

Weapon Components

The weapon’s frame is the main component, as of now we plan to have five different frames ranging in size from ‘small’ to ‘giant’. These frames set the foundation of the weapons’ nature, if you want to make a one-handed pistol, you choose a smaller frame, a rocket launcher would need a larger frame and so on. Elemental weapons can be created using different types of cores that you can find throughout the world, these will give the weapon elemental damage as well as a kickass effect when firing it.

Races

With Astral, we wish to create a diverse game world bursting with life. One of the things we plan to do to achieve this is to have a set of different races. These races will be playable, and they will also appear in the world as NPC’s. All of the races will have their own unique look along with a subset of different customization options exclusive to each race. And with that, we want to introduce you to one of the races that will appear in the game.

The Dubokos

The Dubokos

A relatively peaceful race of amphibious humanoids, often found inhabiting planets with deep oceans and lakes. The Dubokos prefer to live secluded from other civilizations, usually dwelling deep below the oceans’ surfaces or in hidden swamps. They build cities on the ocean floors and live in villages scattered throughout swamps and lakes. Rarely has anyone seen a Duboko outside of their territory, especially traveling alone, but on some rare occasions they do venture out to seek new worlds and become merchants, specializing in dealing with goods from their civilization. The level of technology they possess is just high enough for their needs as a peaceful race.Due to their minimal interactivity with the outside world, the Dubokos can seem rude and blunt, but none the less they show a high level of intelligence. It seems that they lack interest in anything going on outside of their world. Not being directly hostile, the Dubokos are very secretive of their culture, not much is known about it. Judging by the obelisks and religious monuments in the villages, they have a strong religious belief. There are no records of the Dubokos ever being involved in a war, but due to their lack of an army or any real defense from attackers, they have been victims to raiding slavers for over 200 years. The slavers have raided many Duboko settlements on the surface, usually those in the swamps and near lakes, killing and kidnapping civilians to sell on the slave market. Although these surface settlements have often fallen victim to the slavers, the large cities on the dark ocean floors have never been touched. In fact they have never been seen by any other than the Dubokos, and our only source of their existence is from travelling Dubokos that have mentioned them.We want to remind you that Astral still is early in the development process, and many of the things we show you are subject to change, so your feedback is much appreciated. Flare lighting effect(prototype)

We were aching to show some in game footage, so here is a gif from our prototype showing the lighting effect caused by a flare in a cave.
