HellTown is a custom WAD for Hexen. There is no hub system. It is one megaWAD, that interprets as zones. You will need to travel throughout the zones and return to ones you've visited before once you've obtained the proper pieces to the puzzles to progress. Journals and other documents are keys of information that reveal the story and hint at the solutions. The game was made without difference in difficulty regarding number of monsters, the game progressively becomes more challenging as you near it's end.
I wanted to play this, but it is way too dark, especially in some areas.
Add on top of that that if you use the torch, there are still some areas that do not get the effect of the torch, so you basically play in darkness.
Can anything be done?
It works for me. Try turning up your gamma. The dark and light is apart of the strategy involved in the game. Thanks for trying, hope this helps.
That sounds like it's more of a problem in gzdoom itself. That's why I prefer playing Heretic and Hexen in stock ZDoom instead of gzdoom, there's something wrong with the OpenGL renderer that makes things unnecessarily dark and lacking sharpness. I can fine tune gzdoom and achieve a look almost identical to software renderer, but it's such a big number of tweaks that I can't explain all of them here. The main one I would recommend is using gzdoom 4.5.0 (that version fixed a lot of problems) and selecting the Light Mode called Software. (Software Lighting Mode... Options, Display, Hardware Renderer)
Demonstration Footage that I recorded earlier today:
70 freaking Megabytes LOL
This better be good...
I'm gonna report back LOL
Well it's very rough to be sure it's a primitive attempt at map making in hindsight.
I loaded the ZIP directly with gzdoom 4.5.0 (released 2020) and the MP3 music files are not loaded... Any tips for loading the music?
I wasn't able to make the mp3's replace the original game music so I played them as a 'SOUND'...just have to mute the game music in options. I usually just drag the WAD file over GZDOOM, I can hear the music, not sure what the problem is.
well I've tried several times with the newest version of GZDOOM (4.8.0) and sometimes the music runs and sometimes it doesn't. Apologies for the poor programming on my part.
