Fails to run on Windows 11 here: Debug Assertion Failed! It says it happened in CrashHandler.cpp, line 422. Expression: 0 != dwTemp

Then it loads the actual error.

You guys should automatically get the bug report.

Make sure it’s installed to a very short path like C:\DN4

c:\df should be short enough, right? Still didn't work... Damn.

I had that problem and figured it out. go to the control panel. click "systems and security". then click "system". then click "advanced system settings". go to the "performance" settings. go to "data execution prevention" and set it to "turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only". after that, hit apply and restart you computer.

Loading manual saves causes the game to crash, and sometimes the hud does not show.

not sure if known or not but Rocketlauncher alt attack if you dont have ammo for it in multiplayer makes it go negative and will not let you switch weapons

current workaround is to drop it and pick it up again to fix it

not to sound voracious, but is there a chance for future linux builds?

A lot of us on the team do want to see native linux builds. For now, it does work well with Proton or Wine. The Editor is a little wonky in them but usable

Hi! Awesome what you did! I missed this a lot and finally was able to play under Linux/WINE. Some things:

More options:
- more screen resolutions for e.g. 16:9 (only 4:3 can be chosen from)
- limit FPS (you already have minimum FPS in user.ini)
- vsync (exposed option in settings)
- Show FPS counter

Ran perfectly with default settings under WINE. Now it keeps crashing in Dark Hotel map (the one where I forgot to put on night vision, LOL). If you need save-game + some logs?

Not sure why you are having an issue with resolutions. This update added support for even more resolutions than the First Slice.

Just looked though the change notes. Why'd you remove peeing on enemies to gain ego? I thought that was a neat little addition and hilariously "Duke".

In my opinion having it bound to a button should be a cheat code or something.

Still, great work guys. Cant wait to see more!

So we changed it so now it's a Level Designer's choice. Each enemy has a toggle what allows the creator to enable or disable it.

i just made this account to write this comment!
very impressive! you have a full functioning game better than the original Creators in under a year!!!!!
i have a simple question for you, will you going to be working on Duke 3D Restoration or that other duke game that was leaked within the last year?
would it be possible to do a skin pack for duke 3D using the stuff you have built for duke forever? it would be kind of cool to implicate this graphics to say duke nukem forever 2013 edition with these graphics or at least with 3D models and the skins from say this game right here
thank you again for your time and hard work on this very impressive project!

So, I gave First Slice a try in December 2022 and had a few issues, but got through the first few levels. Decided to wait until some updates might have fixed a few of those issues. Today I tried this Duke It Out update and I'm still getting a few issues.

The first issue was just a lockup in the first level. I used some interactable item and then Duke was unable to move. I could still access menus, but could not move Duke. Didn't happen on the second run, so it seems a little random.

The second issue is that I cannot load a save into the "Secret Level". Made it to the secret level from the relevant point in the campaign levels, but saved part way through in order to come back later. Now when I load my save, or even the autosave from the start of the level, I get a crash stating:

"DukeForever.exe caused an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in module Engine.dll at 0023:77B6C149, UObject::ProcessEvent()+0105 byte(s)"

Followed by the other captured details. I chose the option to send the information via email to the coders, if that helps.

I can load my previous save, though, from just before I get to the secret level.

Thank you so much to the Restoration Modding Team. I had downloaded the 2001 build when it had leaked, but it was in such a sorry state--bugs, crashing, missing/incomplete things that I didn't bother with it very much. I've just now given the current build of Restoration Mod a try, and holy **** this is the Duke Forever game we all imagined and knew to be from the trailers. I'm amazed just how much 3D Realms had accomplished (and why they ditched this masterpiece seems all the more puzzling) but your hard, dedicated work is what turned gaming's most notorious disappointment into the masterpiece it always deserved to be! Now, personally I've always been a defender of DNF 2011; it gets more flak than it deserves imo, but this is the "true" DNF experience. DNF 2011 is much more cheesy and really funny, while DNF 2001 is (mostly) a serious action/horror flick. I think the new Duke voice actor not only hits a home run here with his impression; the voicing is arguably better than what John St. John might've done. JSJ adds the personality, while this guy has the action hero vibe. A more restrained, serious Duke. I will say, the one-liners are at times a little out of place, detracting from the immersion. Like joking about how badass he is in the middle of what is supposed to be a horror scene. Or saying "Oooh, new hardware" for the 20th time after picking up an M16. That should only happen for new weapon pickups. But these are minor nitpicks. The level design, gameplay, weapons, interactivity, etc. are all amazing. These levels feel a lot more fleshed out than their counterparts in DNF 2011, although getting to drive around the casino in a toy car was pretty cool too. The Half-Life influence is strong in this incarnation of the game.

If I have to give one critique, I think the dialogue in the Late Night talk show segment could've been better. It lacks personality and humor. And I don't expect stellar voice acting from a free project, but if you guys could get such a great Duke VA, I think it would really make a difference if we could have someone who kinda sounds like Letterman or Conan or Leno or Carson to voice it. And the other thing missing is the band. Every time a guest appears on stage, there's always the on-set band performing live some intro theme as they walk out. Even just having that kind of music scripted to play when the curtains open would be really good.
