A quick overview of the TRW launcher, which lets you customise your skin, fighting style, and special abilities.

Hi, just a small update this evening.

One thing many people have asked me is how the custom profiles in TRW work. Although I've described it a few times, thinking about it, I can't honestly remember if I've actually shown it to you. So without further ado here it is:

TRW LauncherEdit Profile

The TRW launcher is a simple launching program that Ken made in VB, which lets you create and modify a custom character profile. In the mod, the idea is that you'll be able to choose between set characters from the story, or your own special custom character. So, using the profile launcher, if you wanted to, you could play the entire thing as Apoc, Seraph, or Agent Smith, or whoever you like (including bonus characters like Jackie Chan). As well as a character select, you can also customise your fighting style and special abilities.

The modular design has also allowed us to introduce a rudimentary form of character/skill development. Although it's not possible to code a proper levelling system that unlocks skills as you progress (something we considered); under additional skills you can set your character's level of awareness inside the Matrix, which unlocks various special abilities like bullet dodging, anti gravity jumps, wallrunning, and so on.

This is one of the reasons the mod has taken so long to develop. When we initially discovered that it was possible to do this, naturally we fell into 'kitchen sink' mode (i.e. feature creep). As a result, it has taken me quite a long time to trim the mod down, while still offering a decent amount of customisation. However, I think it was worth it - no other Max Payne mod does customisation (that I'm aware of), and I really hope it will extend the lifespan and replayability of the mod and thereby justify the over-long development time.

Well, that's it. Cheers for now! :)

Two things I should stress at this point:

1. Right now I'm developing this on a Windows 7, 64-bit system. That's the target platform. The sound bug has been accounted for, but you'll still need to patch Max Payne first (if I get permission, I'll bundle the sound patch with it) It should work fine on XP as well.

2. The launcher is an entirely optional program. You can run the regular mpm as a standalone mod if you want. You won't be able to customise your character, but the mod still has a 'story' mode, with preset characters from the films. If you're adventurous, you could also configure the kungfu.h file by hand. =)
