Hey, I found this alpha release on fileplanet and checked it out. I'm sure the MSUC guys will figure it out, but you've messed up your directory structure a bit. (There was no Published folder). I was able to load your map and menu and check it out. The artwork is quite good in game, and I can see potential for gameplay.

You clearly have a large artwork team working on this - and it looks great! - but when it comes to the actual game and gameplay I can see there is much work to be done. You guys clearly need some more coders!

I'm wondering - is this a closed mod group, or are you looking around for extra coding help? I might be interested.

We know that, before posting the link publicly we are going to fix the last huge bugs in this build, it is now a base we can build on and add more gameplay. So far we never neded a published folder, just use the links and set them up to your files and it'll work, so i don't see why we should use the published folder just now, or does it make any difference?
However as for the team it is currently closed, i'm not sure if we are going to open it sometime soon, but for now the team is pretty much settled with 2 more coders waiting to start on it.
As for the work to be done, feel free to send your feedback :)
We have quite a liost of things that need to be fixed, but who knowsmaybe you found more :)

The directory structure shouldn't have been too much of a problem - all one needs to do is rename the CookedPC folder to Published and the maps will load. It's just that Unreal can't find maps in less they're in a folder called Published. (Or Unpublished if -useunpublished is being used). You guys are off to a good start though, the cinematics for meeting the old man and getting the first quest are very good. How do you plan on setting up the flight controls?

Later I'll load it up again and look at the map in the editor and give a more detailed review. Looks good so far though!

Oh, is this going to have online play?

Hey I am sorry to be such a newb here but HOW do I get the mod installed? Update my paths? I tried that, I made a shortcut to Unreal.exe in my binaries folder and added your additional console commands, it starts up but then can't find the DM 001 map. A simple step by step install guide would be great thanks. My UT3 runs fine but I got some path errors when I tried other ways of modifying the shortcuts in your zip.

Where should the folders go, what do I do to the short cuts. I saw your mod posted on ZBCentral and really want to check it out but I haven't really ever installed one before.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think this release was really intended for public use, but one of the things you need to do is rename the CookedPC folder Published. Then assuming you've put the Airborn folder inside of the Unreal Tournament 3 folder, (next to UTGame) then you can run ut3 with -mod=..\Airborn and tell it to load DM-001.ut3. IIRC DM-000.ut3 is the little intro writing they had that showed controls, and Menu.ut3 is the Menu. Keep in mind that it is beta and I believe the only quest available is scaring away the seagulls. The art is really good though.

hm thanks Charybdis3

I renamed the folder but I still get an error that it can't find the map. I looked in the folders and I see the map is inside a second folder called custom maps C:\Program Files\Unreal Tournament 3\Airborn\published\CustomMaps

I tried changing what it should load to menu and it just said it couldn't find that.

THis is my target entry in the shortcut to UT3.exe I made, which I have in my binaries folder.

""C:\Program Files\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries\UT3.exe" menu?game=Airborn.Airborn -windowed -resx=1280 -resy=720 -log -ConsolePosX=0 -ConsolePosY=0 -useunpublished -mod=..\Airborn"

The original shortcut provided with the files didn't have "" around the path to UT3.exe and I couldn't seem to edit it without adding those.

I know the game is a beta and I have editors I could open the assets in I just wanted to see it all as intended and run around.

I even tried changing the folder name to unpublished :) seee I am newbish... but same results.

any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Your directory structure looks correct, but just for kicks try making the Published capitalized. I guess there was another thing I forgot to mention - I had to make a custom .ini file for the map.

Make a file called DM-001.ini and put this in it:

[DM-001 UTUIDataProvider_MapInfo]
MapName=DM-001
FriendlyName=001
PreviewImageMarkup=<Images:UI_FrontEnd_Art.GameTypes.DeathMatch>
Description=None

One note however, it looks like DM-000.ut3 is the map that was intended to be used. Quote polyphobia on an epic forum post "the link loads dm-001 which is a dummymap not dm-000 which is newer and less buggy".

That was posted here: Forums.epicgames.com

So maybe try DM-000 instead anyway...

Yes you're right, it wasn't intended for the public. It's mostly an art tech demo with as much functionality and gameplay as we could get in. It took a long time to set everything up and build the foundation but it'll be easier to evolve it further.

Thanks for taking the time to help with the installing :)

Np. I had two questions I was wondering about though:

1. Will the mod have any online play?
2. How will the airplanes be controlled?

Thanks guys. I'll be keeping an eye on this mod.

There's no online play planned for Airborn for now. We might try something later but we are focusing on making a fun (and hopefully not too short :)) single player adventure.

The airplanes will be implemented just like any other system, we script various prototypes, everyone tries it, and then we script some more until everyone likes how it plays. Having said that, we'll try to make something unique out of it. Hopefully it won't be anything you've seen or played before :)

also did you play with keyboard or xontroller? the current build is definitely made for the xbox controller not mouse and keyboard movement... thanks for reminding me i have to put that into the disclaimer at the start...

huh, no good mouse and keyboard support? Now that puts down my expectations. Unreal titles have always been with high focus on mouse controls.
I don't need to use anything worse than that.

Look it is very simple we had to decide for possible future plans and its more likely that airborn is going console, so we focussed on that, you can use the mouse, you can use the keyboard but its not as polished. We had to decide at one point what to do and we decided to go for the controller as its the best way of controlling such a game.
Airborn is not Unreal, Airborn is no Shooter, its a total conversion thats barely builds up on Unreal Tournament. We know that there are a hell lot of things to fix and that its far from even a alpha stage, gameplay wise but it is a start and it is a base to build upon.
