New pick up system may be released with the mod...

Posted by on

Hi all, me and Ghoul thought about editing the pickup system to make the playing harder or to prevent randomly pickuping ammo. We came with this up, when we were playing and we had about 90 % of HP and there was dropped medkit... When you bump on the medkit, you will take it automatically, but when there is a fight and you lost some hp, you cant do anything with this... But this way, you may leave that medkit, and use it after fight, when it will be efficient... But this system will prevent player to pick up weapon, ammo or medkit and travel with it through the map... and the second, when you have already an SMG and you will find one, when you try to pickup it it will only disappear cuz you already have one and you will gain no ammo, so it is pointless to find for new weapons if you already have them... and another thing... when you will pickup the medkit and you have 100% HP, it will became normal medkit, which you will automatically pickup when you will bump on it. So please write your suggestions into the comment and tell us what to do.

I think it's a great idea. I get frustrated with wanting to leave one behind as you said, but not being able to avoid using it with 92% health. I'd much rather go back for it when I needed it. Good feature to have for strategizing your play a bit.

As far as the ammo goes, perhaps taking a cue from Stalker and designating some sort of stashes, extra crates for ammo or simply more frequent supply stations here and there, but not so much of either ( med kits or ammo )that it makes the game ridiculously easy at any difficulty.

I would be happy to see you implement this. It might make some " walk through the game " players a bit miffed, but it would be a fine element for those who actually enjoy a challenge in their game play.

Make it so you have to click use and pickup it like planting a bomb (maybe a lil bar to show how long)
and if people don't want that, maybe make a setting to half the pickup time to be fair. but taking no time to grab 5 minikits instantly from dead combines' when 10 are still shooting you is wrong.

so why you are pickuping medkits while you are shooting ? Thats why we did that. I have to be real, not like you are fighting enemy and healing yourself too

Weapons have MAGs (*gasp*), you don't have to carry 3 copies of a gun around just to be able to fire it. So cancelling auto-pickup is kinda... meh. Maybe you should use a mag system.

and do you think that shotguns have magazines ? Or when you open the revolver the bullets will drop to ground and find them now. There shouldnot be any gun with magazine

I've encountered this problem myself. Try adding a var that controls capacity of the item, and modify the pickup and ammo-giving functions accordingly, so that ammo and health pickups work like loose weapons with ammo still inside the magazine or cylinder or chamber. I'd demonstrate, but right now this is low-priority for my mod (need to write a first pass of the Overwatch dispatcher, finish more weapon code and rework accuracy and recoil behavior across the board) - it'll have to change when I get around to implementing inventory and magazines. Also, you could try simply returning when you 'bump' an item, and only handling pickups through the 'use' items functions.
