For those of you who haven't been keeping up, the HL2 source leak has been confirmed:
Gabe wrote: Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.
Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code. Here is what we know:
1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.Well, this sucks.
What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.
We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.
Any trading of source code, associated files or links to places where it is available on modDB will be stamped on.
Well I hope Valve can catch who ever leaked it!!!!
really upsets me - hope they don't delay over more over this but they have good reason to now.
valve has my support now...
Hey, i'll stamp code snippets also.
Now it's fair :devious:
Holy Satan! ... Valve ****** by a Outlook Express troyan!!
Conclusion:
Bill Gates is more deadly than Carmack :D
I can't post anything about the source code? Oh yes I can:

HALF-LIFE 2 SOURCE CODE - LEAKED BY T0Y22
--------------------------------------------------
----
Installation notes:
just un-rar into a directory and compile using the batch files.
The DX9 fog code is a bit quirky because this is an old version, but if you change the some of #defines in the graphic file headers it works fine.
Get it at www.thisisafake.com/ifyouhavent/noticedthesarcasm..
yet !!!!!1111oneone :D
This is why I like MacOS better than Windows, its harder to breach its secrurity!!!
why anyone would wanna steal the hl2 source is beyond me, unless they want to get a head start on the modding community, or unless they want to modify it alot and flog it to id and say here's a basic doom 4 engine for ya....
MacOS is easy to hack. its just not a main focus. Unless I make it one.
Stupid bitchass hackers they should all be shot.
If you guys actuly come across someone who has had access to the leaked code, or is bragging about having the source, please be sure to report it to valve, or even one of the admins here, who will get it onto valve.
Stuff like this should not be happening, and the dickhead that has done it, or dickheads has now ruined hl2 for everyone. We all know this will cause an even longer delay because Valve will not continue to work on it till they find whats going on, so lets give them a hand!
this will give some mod teams more time though so some what of an upside???
But its more of a downside. Most modders are waiting to map, and code. But they can't just make concepts and models forever.
amen to that
I give the original ******* 48 hours maximum. I gave vALVE 12 hours to make a statement after it going public and they managed in 2...
It sucks that this happened... but at least someone got Steam..
It's outrageous to see such a blatant stealing of someones hard work. The Source engine is a programming holy grail, and for someone to steal that form it's creators should be shot and killed after they deal with the software nazi police!!
programming is tough work, and kudos to the team at valve for creating such a great and revolutionary engine.
Seeing as my stupid host (hostonce sux) shut down my site... I have nothing better to do but help and search for the leak ;)
QUOTE: "...Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane..."
As for how it was leaked... I mean honestly who uses Outlook preview panel.. everyone knows Outlook=easy virus/trojan vunrabilities!
meh...
I'll keep my eyes peeled!
Wouldn't it have been funny if the hacker had put the code on the Steam servers and everyone automatically downloaded it :)

The csnation post actually links to the hl2.net forums as its source.
Anyways I hope the people responsible get caught - quickly
now I smell cheaters in hl2...
THATS IT, Im playing farcry.
There would be cheaters even if the source code wasn't leaked. People don't cheat because they can - they cheat because they're unhappy, because the gameplay is such that it frustrates. Why does CS have so many cheaters yet BG and Gladiator have so few? Because it is so easy to die in CS - and after you die you can't play. Also, even if people do cheat, it's not going to be on the first day of HL2's release. It takes time to write cheats, and by the time we do start seeing cheats, Valve will probably have started patching the game and making it more robust. I don't care if cheating is one of the consequences of the source code leak - that's why you get admins to kick cheaters.
However, what is quite bad about the leak is that now all that million dollar technology which they've painstakingly created over the last five years is available for everyone to see. This is the worst nightmare of every developer - my suggestion to Valve would be to not bother with the localization and to simply release the game already.

oh well, a loss for valve, a loss for us fans, a great win for the open source movement.
They should just release the game anyway, unless of course they were allready going to delay it...
