Custom models or generic models? We're asking you to decide.

Posted by on

Hello there,

So we can't find anyone to model our character models for us so we're having to resort to downloading models from free 3D model sites for us to get this game done by next year.

What we're asking you is are you happy with us having generic models for the mod? Or would you like to see our own custom models? It'll take quite some time to get those models done though as we're aiming for at least 40 models for the first chapter due to it being a city with lots of people roaming around inside of it.

I've tried searching for people to model for us, but they aren't interested simply because we still don't have any concrete work done.

What we can honestly say to you is this: we've done the props, the prop's textures, the main character's voice acting apart from Eli, we've implemented credits within the mod and we've also done our own musical score for Chapter One.

All we have left is the map which is being worked on and is to be done by Xmas, the models, the rest of the generic voice acting and choreography.

If you know anyone that can model characters for us please post here or PM me. But we're asking you before we move forward on this decision.

Thanks.

I say don't worry, just work with generic models and then when you have some concrete work done, modelers will get interested.
The advantage is that we'll have earlier a mod release (pre-pre-alpha or something) and then, if you find modelers, you will be able to replace the models by new ones.

Well judging by the things you have done, you have left the hardest (character models and possible coding) last?

For creating the character models, I recommend Makehuman that can export to blender (or 3dsmax) that can export to HL2 and they are both free. But you still need someone to model clothes, rig the model and make animations naturally which is the biggest issue you guys have.

I can tell you, no single person does 40 HL2 character models with textures and animations in a YEAR let alone in 2-3 months. I don't think anyone has ever done 40 HL2 character models... ever. You have big aims but you will probably have to settle for something much much less, like multiplying and reskinning the civilian model for starters and it could yield some very decent results for the mod. I'm sure I saw a tutorial on that somewhere...

I'm not sure where you plan on getting the "free 3D characters", but I hope you're not assuming the whole process is just plug-and-play.

We already have the 40 models. They just need to be rigged.

It would be nice to see some new models for once, as the generic ones are almost always used. Not a huge game changer though, so only if it's not much of a hassle :)

I'm okay with generic models, if a few custom could make it in the game great. I understand time is a pressing factor so I offer this, use generics as plan b, but try and get a few customs as well, I would love to help out in even a small way. If there is any thing I can do to help let me know.
