Bardock era um homem corajoso de uma raça guerreira que conquistava planetas à serviço de Freeza. Certo dia foi à um planeta chamado Kanassa ao qual recebeu um golpe e, a partir daí, começou a ter visões do futuro, e descobriu, com isso, que Freeza os trairia. Quando voltou a seu planeta para avisar os outros sobre Freeza descobriu que seu filho nascera e deu à ele o nome de Kakarotto. Pouco antes de Freeza destruir o planeta onde morava e fazer com que sua raça fosse quase extinta, Bardock mandou seu filho para a Terra e essa é sua história...

Quando chegou a Terra, sua nave caiu em um floresta, onde foi encontrado por Son Gohan (Vovôzinho) ao qual lhe deu o nome de Son Goku e lhe ensinou uma luta chamada Kung-Fu. Ele também lhe deu uma esfera com quatro estrelas. Seu avozinho se encarregou bem de lhe ensinar o certo e o errado, e se às vezes Goku exagera, não o faz por maldade. Quando seu avozinho morreu ele conheceu Bulma, que lhe disse sobre sete esferas místicas que quando reunidas, faziam sair um dragão chamado Shen Long e realizaria um pedido ao possuidor das esferas. Por Goku ter a esfera de número quatro, Bulma o convenceu de sair com ela em busca das outras. Com ela, ele teve muitas aventuras, onde em uma delas conheceu Yancha e seu gato Poal, que pode se transformar e Oolong, que estudou na mesma escola de magia de Poal, podendo assim se transformar também. Goku era um menino diferente, pois tinha um rabo e quando olhava para a lua em noite de lua cheia, se transformava em uma macaco gigante. Certo dia, ele e Bulma acharam uma tartaruga falante que lhes disse que estava perdida e eles a ajudaram a voltar pra casa, apesar de Bulma não gostar da idéia. Quando chegaram a casa dela, Goku conheceu O Mestre Kame Sennin que lhe deu uma nuvem dourada voadora como gratificação por achar sua tartaruga, e um tempo depois, treinou ele e Kurilin (um garoto baixinho e careca) em artes marciais e ensinou-os a técnica Kame hame ha. À partir daí, Goku teve mais aventuras enfrentando muitos inimigos como a exército Red Ribbon (Patrulha Vermelha) à qual destruiu com um Kame hame ha, pois estavam com a esfera de quatro estrelas que pertenceu a seu avô adotivo. Também enfrentou Piccolo Damaioh, que era a parte má de Kami Sama, e no momento de sua morte, cuspiu um ovo de onde nasceu Piccolo Má Júnior (que futuramente se tornaria um grande amigo de Goku). Goku conhece um gigante chamado Rei Cutelo e sua filha Chi Chi, à qual promete que voltará para se casarem (mas Goku nem sabia o que era casamento, prometeu pois pensou que era alguma coisa de comer). Passam-se os anos e Goku se encontra com Chi Chi em um torneio Budoukai e ela o lembra de sua promessa, os dois se casam. Passam-se mais alguns anos e Goku e Chi Chi tem um filho e Goku lhe da o nome de seu falecido avozinho, Son Gohan. Goku conhece um homem que vê do espaço, Raditz, que diz ser seu irmão e lhe revela que Goku vem de uma raça guerreira chamada saiyajin e que foi enviado à Terra com o propósito de destruí-la e como não o fez, Raditz veio para mata-lo e destruir a Terra. Raditz também disse que se ele não conseguisse completar seu objetivo em dois anos viriam mais dois saiyajins. Goku pediu para Piccolo treinar seu filho e se sacrificou para poder mata Raditz. No céu, Goku treinou com o Sr. Kaioh Sama do Norte e aprendeu a Genki-Dama. Goku voltou à vida pelo poder das esferas do dragão e enfrentou os dois saiyajins, Vegeta e Nappa, saindo vitorioso. Pouco tempo depois, foi ao planeta nata de Piccolo e Kami Sama (Namekusei) para enfrentar Freeza, que estava no poder das esferas do dragão de namekusei, querendo como desejo, a vida eterna. Goku encontrou lá seu antigo rival, Vegeta, mas antes de encontrar Freeza enfrentou sua força de elite, as Forças Especiais Guinyu. Na luta contra Freeza Goku consegue se transformar no Lendário Super Saiyajin e derrotar Freeza facilmente. Quase um ano depois aparece um jovem chamado Trunks e diz aos amigos de Goku que ele retornaria em um tempo de 3 horas. Goku retorna e diz que estava em um planeta chamado Yadratt e aprendeu o teletransporte. Trunks revela à Goku sobre uns andróides que virão daqui à 3 anos para mata-lo, mas diz que ele morrerá antes devido uma doença no coração, mas lhe trás um remédio do futuro para combater a doença. Goku tem um duro treinamento até chegar o dia da luta e enfrenta os andróides 19 e 20, este, o próprio doutor Maki Gero, da antiga Red Ribbon que queria se vingar de Goku. Também enfrentou os andróides 16, 17, 18 e 21, este, tendo os poderes de todos os melhores guerreiros do universo, incluindo Goku e Freeza, e mais uma vez, Goku se sacrifica para salvar a Terra. Chi Chi estava grávida e assim nasce o segundo filho de Goku, Son Goten. Os anos passam e surge uma nova ameaça, Magin Boo, um demônio muito forte. Goku volta do além em sua forma de Super Saiyajin 3, mas mesmo com todo esse poder não pode combater o demônio, então realiza a fusão potala com Vegeta, nascendo então Vegetto, mas Magin Boo absorve Vegetto e a fusão se desfaz. Ao sair de seu corpo, Goku pulveriza Magin Boo usando uma Genki Dama feita com o poder de todos os terráqueos, mas antes, pede que Magin Boo retorne como uma boa pessoa. Passam-se dez anos e Goku conhece a reencarnação de Magin Boo, Oob e decide treina-lo. Nessa mesma época, Goku já tem uma neta de quatro meses, Pan, filha de Gohan. Passam-se mais cinco anos e aparece Baby, um tsufurujin que quer se vingar de todos os saiyajins e apossa-se do corpo de Vegeta. Baby é o responsável pela incrível transformação de Goku em Super Saiyajin 4. Pilaf, um antigo inimigo de Goku, retorna e faz ele retornar à fiorma infantil com a ajuda das esferas do dragão. O andróide 17 também retorna e uma forma diferente e mais forte, mas também foi derrotado.
