PROGRAMMING.
Yeah, I think the most logical programming method would be to take the "behind wall" cover function in Empires, and change it to trenches.
The game already has deployable trenches- Granted they are no where near as detailed. I question if you might have to make it a part of the actual level geometry- you would have to make a behind wall occur definitely but for the most part its really just a dip in the terrain- the unit is protected from guns fire as the game uses precision shooting to determine hits or not. I think it could work though and be pretty great.
Are you using this as your height map ?, or what is the function of the model ?
