Uplink OS v096 BETA for STEAM
Surprise weekend update!
Fixed some crashes and did some more bug fixing and polishing!
NOTE: Do take in mind, that some changes need a NEW USER created!
NOTE2: If you're updating from pre-093, you need to clean the 'users' folder!
Installation
Inside the archive you'll find the UplinkOS executable, its resource files and the ReadMe.
In case you're like me and you don't read ReadMes, here's the installation instructions:
- Of course, you'll need the STEAM version of the game.
- After downloading the Mod, unzip it into a place of your choice.
- Go to Uplink's installation folder. In STEAM's case, the default is: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Uplink
- Copy the contents of the Mod's zip file into this folder.
- Go to the "users" folder. Back-up & move/delete all the files here.
- Back-up the original Uplink.exe.
- Rename UplinkOS.exe to Uplink.exe.
- Now just run Uplink from the STEAM interface and your ready to start hacking!
This is a BETA so you will encounter some bugs that I missed (especially in the later parts of the game where I didn't test as often as I should have). In case you encounter something please make a screenshot and post about it in the BUGS forum.

Thanks for all your effort dude! Haven't played this game in like 12 years!!! Now I'm eagerly awaiting every update!
No problem! Happy hacking! :D
"Added Save Game button"
Holy crap I love you. Thanks so much for the continued work!
Don't get too attached to it! I'm thinking of removing it when the mod hits Gold! ;)
Thanks for the kind words!
Downloader and deleter timings now seem perfectly acceptable, but password breaker's still ridiculously fast, which I think kinda messes with the difficulty. I mean, playing vanilla, on the first CPU all I seem to be doing is panicking while waiting for the password breaker to do its thing...Switch to this and it's done before I know it.
Wouldn't it be possible to just have all the timings for every app be the same as in vanilla?
Well that's what I actually tried to do and compared a few instances to vanilla were they were pretty much the same (on interNIC - easiest - and Criminal Database - harder). Still, I do agree there's some balancing that needs to be done.
Brilliant! The whole app speed thing is just a minor gripe imho, but as long as you're aware it's there, all's well. Now, back to testing - no crashes yet, fingers crossed it'll stay that way. :3
(sorry too lazy to create an account) The UI for vanilla uplink is rather dated and difficult to see with the modern resolution, making the game annoying if not impossible to enjoy. Cpt, I saw your mod through IV's youtube channel and instantly knew that I wanted to play the game. With some crashes here and there but I'm always looking forward to an update. Your mod literally made me buy the game on steam in order to play it. Keep up the good job, and do let us know if there's a donate button somewhere.
Hey! Thanks a lot for the kind words! I have thought about a donate button (mostly to raise some funds for the NPC portraits), but I did not look into it and have no clue at the moment on how to do that. XD
Did you encounter a lot of crashes? It would really help if you'd report them on the mods forum pages or on the game's Steam discussion!
I'm happy you enjoy the mod! Cheers!
Perhaps patreon or something similar?
Hey. Uplink was and still is one of my all time favourite games!
You're work is amazing. I bow in you're presence :-D
Please can you make it compatible with Steam on Mac as well. Would definitely donate if and when you get it up and running.
Hey! Thanks a lot for the kind words!
Unfortunately, the Mac version is a long way off, IF it's even coming... I don't know if its even possible to make it from the source code I have, but I do want to look into it. No promises though, sorry!
