Tour of Duty is a realistic team play mod for Halflife by Valve Software. The game is set at the height of the Vietnam war, between 1967 and 1973 allowing you to relive the conflict fighting either for the United States Marine Corp (USMC) or the Viet Cong (VC)/North Vietnamese Army (NVA). The mod features realistic weapons of the period, and a number of gameplay styles including control point capture, demolition or bombing missions, capture the flag/radio/codemachine and escape and evasion are the currently coded styles. We are also planning on adding rescue missions, where you'll rescue a general or famous figure. We've added support for some vehicles that players can ride into the action in, with guns 'ablazing', right now, we have a huey that players ride to the bomb target zone, and have plans for PT boats in future levels.

Well, I hinted that something was up at Tour of Duty last week. We've made some internal shuffles in responsibilities, and got some new blood to bring our mod back to the spotlight, and address things for you -- the players.

We've needed some direction and leadership for a while, and assistance with PR. HuRR from the battlegrounds will be coming in to be a leader of Tour of Duty as well and public relations person.

I will be formally acknowledged as the technical director of ToD, and assuming some miscellaneous leadership duties.

The Jeep, as well as continuing on as a level designer, will also assume a leadership role as our creative director.

There are many on this team without their leadership, we could not have managed to get where we are today, and while they may we may not formally acknowledge them as a leader, they most certainly are.

Another important announcement concerns the future of the mod.

Tour of Duty 1.3 is the final release we plan on doing for the Halflife engine. It may take a little bit more time than we had planned, because we will be getting most of the models re-skinned, and some better animations for them.

We will continue to maintain and fix bugs or major deficiencies for the Halflife version, however, we will not do any new development for the Halflife engine.

Why this is so, is because we will now be developing and designing a Halflife 2 version of Tour of Duty. We will not be porting what we have now for Halflife 2, we will be doing an entirely new mod in some regards, taking lessons learned from Halflife, and taking into account the feedback we have received from our community over the past year or so.

While this will not be my last news post, the majority of our news will be probably posted by others, as I drive forward research into the technical nuances of the new engine, and find as many bugs or issues in the old codebase as possible. Look for more regular updates, and more frequent submissions to news sites and welcome the new folks to the team
