Stellaris Zero is a mechanics overhaul mod focused around overhauling the internal management aspect of the game. With everything from political parties to pirate empires to redesigned rebellions, the goal is to improve upon the under-utilized systems in the game. Mainly, factions and governments.

Features in initial release:

  • All the vanilla government types have been removed and replaced with just a few new ones. 4/5 of the new government types (democracies, empires, corporations and pirates) each have their own unique mechanics that define them. Democracies must juggle various political parties, while pirates have to raid to survive.
  • Rebels have been completely overhauled. Peaceful demonstration can turn into empire wide revolution if you are not careful. Civil wars are now major galactic events that can lead to massive wars if foreign empires choose to intervene.
  • Playable pirate nations that act as safe-havens for criminals all across the galaxy and make their profits by raiding and looting.
  • A heresy system, where pops can reject the established beliefs.
  • Pops can escape their empire as refugees, seeking asylum elsewhere. This part of the mod is being implemented into vanilla in 1.5, dang!
  • Some under-the-hood changes that let pops spread their ethics and let minority species propagate, even late in the game.
  • Empire ethics can be changed. Democracies and empires have mechanics allowing ethics to shift over time.
  • A jillion tweaks and bugfixes, most of which I've long forgotten about.

So, I've been putting this off for a while thinking that perhaps I would change my mind, but I don't think that's happening, and I don't want to leave everyone in the dark, so here goes.

I won't be updating SZ any time in the near future, and here's why:

  1. 1.5/1.6 made the original mod mostly obsolete, so I'd have to start from scratch.
  2. It took almost all of my free time for about 2 months straight to put together the original
  3. I'd probably need to go through the same process with every major update.

So yeah, call it developer lazyness if you like, but I just don't feel that the commitment would be worth it. Once Stellaris development settles down then it might make more sense to come back to this project. For now, so long and thanks for all the fish!

P.S. Yard1 was working on a spinoff mod a while ago. I don't know if anything came of it, but it might be worth following: Stellaris Zero Parliamentary Bonaza

Because 1.5 integrated/obsoleted many of the mods features, I need to redesign a lot of stuff from scratch. I'm also waiting for 1.6 to come out before I start working on it. Even then, I still only have so much free time :P

But I'd say it's safe to expect an update about a month or two after 1.6 :)

Hey, finally found a bug. I don't know if it's a problem with the base game but when you hit "Return" or send a fleet/civilian ship back to a station to heal sometimes it'll path them to an enemy station

1. More or less, I'm still doing bugfixes and the like, but I'm waiting for 1.5 before I do anything major.

2. If you're using windows/mac, put the contents of the zip folder into Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris\Mod\
For linux it's ~\.local\share\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris\mod

3. That would be awesome!
