Dev Diary II: Starship Classes

Hello ModDB community, today i'm going to be talking about our starship classes.

As we all know stellaris has 4 starship classes, Corvette, Destroyer, Cruiser and Battleship.
For ST:I we are expanding it by adding 2 more ship classes, Frigate which fits between Corvette and Destroyer, and Heavy Cruiser which is just stronger then a regular Cruiser.

The added ship classes allow us to show you a more wide variety of ships and combat roles. The Frigate will be a bit slower but a lot harder hitting. The Heavy Cruiser will have a lot more specialized roles, for example the Heavy Cruiser can be outfitted to be a carrier, this is something unique to that class. When it comes to customization we will be changing it up a lot, but more info on that later.

Most of you probably realized by now ST:I is not just set in the TMP era..

Star Trek Infinties' first release will feature the late TMP era (right after Star trek 6) all the way through to the Nemesis era. The question that you might raise is...but how will you limit ship classes? The answer is quite simple, for every era there is a new set. So for the start of the game you will get Destroyer unlocked, when you progress through the research you will eventually stumble upon Corvette 2, and Destroyer 2 etc. This allows us to limit what ships you visually see early game and late game.

Ship weapons will also be dealt with a lot differently then the stock game, but that is information for my next mini dev diary. For now, enjoy these 2 pictures of larger later game fleets.

Fancy.

Will there be cloaking devices modeled ingame somehow?
What with the Romulans and Klingons.

Max and Revan will probably try something along those lines, but whether or not it will work both game engine-wise and balance-wise remains to be seen.

We have a few ideas but honestly the mechanic does not exist in Stellaris

Impressive. This makes me fancy for Stellaris. Unfortunately it isn't available here as disc, but luckily the first release of this mod have time and maybe until this I have it. :)

Btw. late TMP era to late TNG era sounds wonderful. I really hope sometimes later we will also see Enterprise era and TOS era too. :D
