Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

It's been pretty quiet here for a while. A little too long, in my opinion, so I'm posting here to let you all know that I am not dead. I have not fallen off the face of the earth, I swear.

Work on the mod continues, albeit slowly. You want proof, you say? Very well. If you feel inclined to pilfer the Shifter Savefile Project Folder you will notice a handy link for the Shifter v1.8 BETA #1. Unlike previous betas this is not a particularly feature-heavy release; most of the changes are bugfixes. However, the bugs addressed are pretty big ones all the same, including the so-called "Pistol Downgrade" trick and the key-assignment mixup that was happening with the new overwritable augmentation system. Assuming none of my bugfixes have created new problems of their own I'd actually recommend using this beta in favor of v1.7.2. If you do find bugs though please email or message me immediately, so that I can fix them.

So what goodies can you look forward to in the eventual, full release of v1.8? Most of my plans aren't completely solidified yet, but I can tell you that v1.8 will probably introduce a new Unique Weapon and a new ammo type for an existing set of weapons. And for you non-English speaking fans of Shifter (wait, then how are you reading this?) I'm also making up a full DeusEx.int file containing all the updated text for items and the like. Once that file is complete it will be possible for someone to translate it to another language. (I've already been contacted by a German fan who has stated that they are willing to translate and produce a German DeusEx.int, actually) Beyond those specifics I'm not going to give away anything else, other than to say that you can expect the same quality Shifter goodness that previous editions of the mod have contained.

Anywho, enjoy v1.8 BETA #1!

P.S. Who else is all fired up about Eidos Montreal announcing Deus Ex 3? So long as it stays moddable, count me in.
