After god knows how many years at PlanetQuake, I've decided to give ModDB a try in an effort to draw new players to this mod. If you've never heard about Vortex, or don't really care about Quake 2 (it's old, after all), here's some reasons why you should give it a shot:
- It's free! That's right, you can download a demo version of Quake 2 and it's just as functional as the full version. The only difference is that they excluded some content from the full-version. Fortunately, getting the missing content as as easy as turning auto downloads on and downloading it from a multi-player server. We've made it even easier by packaging our mod with the Quake 2 demo so you don't have to do anything. Just head on over to the downloads section to grab everything you need or visit our old website (www.planetquake.com/vortex).
- It has an active community. Ok, it's not active enough, which is the reason we're here. Sometimes the server are full, while other times they are completely empty. It all depends on whether our (un)loyal fanbase is playing Warcraft 3 DOTA or not. Bleh. Fortunately, the game is perfectly playable even if you join an empty server. Just fire up the 'vote' menu and select PvM or Invasion mode and fight some monsters until players get around to joining.
- It's loaded with quality content and excellent gameplay. While the graphics won't blow you away (try getting an enhanced Q2 engine like EGL if you want better graphics), the content and gameplay are fun. So many games these days rely on fancy graphics to get you playing rather than good solid gameplay. With FPS and RPG elements, Vortex is jam-packed with quality entertainment.
- It receives regular updates and new content. I've always told my players that I would support the mod with game updates and new content as long as there are people left to enjoy it. I routinely fix bugs, add new gameplay modes, classes, and abilities to keep the game fresh. I've been doing this for almost 10 years now, so you can count on it :)
- The game runs on practically any kind of hardware. Even if you have a low-end PC, I guarantee you that Quake 2 Vortex will run. Hardware requirements are something like: PC with a CPU made in the last decade :) Seriously, Pentium 2 with some kind of graphics card is all you need. OpenGL and even software rendering modes are supported.
- The mod author (me) listens to the community. While I can't do everything my players suggest, sometimes I'll add a new ability or make a game change that someone suggests. You are far more likely to be able to influence this game than any other. I regularly play and converse with the community. I'm easy to reach.
How's that for ya :) You can even find some YouTube videos of Vortex gameplay (search for Vortex Quake 2), or just take a gander at some of the in-game screen shots I made.
