Aperture Science's research into interesting ways of generating energy led them to discover a new way of generating infinite amounts of energy, but this had an unfortunate consequence. It spat out enough heat to cause entire sectors to become unsafe to even be in, luckily, Aperture engineers found a way to vent it across the facility, and keep the reactor cool. This worked until GLaDOS was "disconnected", and the reactor was left unmanaged.
Aperture Science's Variable Intelligence Control Unit is designed to keep testing alive if the GLaDOS initiative is suddenly disconnected. VICU can even test post apocalypse. With the new innovations from Aperture, those from the enrichment centre program can continuously provide data to our remaining servers, even after total structural collapse.
