OpenE2140 is remake of old game Earth 2140 created as mod for open-source OpenRA engine.

Report RSS Preview 6 milestone complete

We've released another preview video to showcase the progress of the development.

Posted by on

Hello everyone!

After 5 months, we've finished another milestone: Preview 6! It's been long 5 months, but the results are worth it.

Preview 6 contains several important features, that we've been implementing these past months:

  • Research
  • Water Base
  • Building Crew
  • UI overlay for MCU deployment
  • ... and more!

Without further ado, here it is. We hope you'll enjoy it:

You can also watch the video on Dalek.zone. Dalek.zone is a PeerTube instance, which is maintained by Dave and Ben. Big thanks goes to these two guys!

Developer Diary: Implementing Water Base

One of the big features that we're showing in the Preview 6 video is Water Base. Since the implementation was rather tricky, but also interesting, we've decided to give it more attention and present it in more detail. Thus we're planning to release a Developer Diary dedicated to Water Base implementation very soon.

Future

We hope you liked the new video. As for the near future, many of you have been asking, when you'll finally be able to play OpenE2140 yourselves. There are still lots of missing features, both smaller (like Miners disarming mines or building walls, HCU-M capturing disabled vehicles) and larger (resource harvesting, fully working AI, SP campaigns). While we could skip some (mainly smaller) features for first public releases, resource harvesting is an example of very important component of Earth 2140 (but also other C&C-like RTS games). And we don't want to release a public version of OpenE2140 without such important features working.

As such we'd like to ask you to be a little bit more patient.

In the meantime, we'd like to invite you to our Discord server, where you can discuss with us and other fans. Occasionally, we post some interesting stuff there, so don't hesitate and join us!

OpenE2140 does not require OpenRA installed beforehand. It is based on it, more specifically it uses its engine. This means OpenRA is distributed alongside of OpenE2140. It is different from other games, where mods require base game installed.

But you're free to install OpenRA and play it, if you want :-) It is free, you don't need to buy Red Alert 1, Tiberian Dawn nor Tiberian Sun, because they were released as freeware by EA long time ago.

Amazing. Some of you should also remake the game "Dark Colony" now that was an epic one. :P So was Earth.

Already reverse engineered it :-P If you want to start dark colony on OpenRA, drop by the OpenE2140 / OpenKrush / OpenRA discord. Ill share all the files to get the assets loaded.

Me and IceReaper would love to but there are major blockers. It is unclear who owns Dark Colony and if we look at past developers and publishers, then there's a chance it's owned by Take-Two which owns for example Rockstar. They are known for not liking such fan projects.

Another blocker is that the game is no longer sold, that wouldn't be a big issue on its own, but the above reason makes it too risky, for example shipping assets or even making them downloadable from other source.

And last but not least, no actual person who could do C# coding. IceReaper has no longer time for OpenRA in general (with some exceptions here and there). If you are recreating any other RTS game in ORA engine, then comprehensive knowledge of ORA codebase and C# language is required.

So as Ice wrote, he already RE'ed game containers and he already prepared asset loaders for OpenRA, so even if you ignore first two blockers, a potential coder could grab what IceReaper started and continue it.

Dzierzan Yeah better not risk anything then. It's not worth the potential trouble. Besides KKND should get finished first then anything else for that matter. A pity that it all fails on the coding side.

There are many websites out there where coders offer their services for a minor fee. Some even help out for free. It's a chance for them to improve themselves. Perhaps you 2 should attempt finding such people out there on said websites.

No, it doesn't work like that. Notice projects like OpenKrush or OpenE2140 or anything other you pass by, are done by people who like the original game or thing. You can't make some randoms to do stuff, unless it's paid. Which is out of the question.

Anyway, this is getting off-topic. Enjoy OpenE2140 ;-)
