this is just a render, not an ingame pic. Of course, when the model will be placed it will be dipped into the ground, so the rock will appear to be mixed with ground and you won't have that impression anymore :)

Trees can grow on rocks actually. That's not something out of ordinary.

They can, but not on this one. The rocks should be extremely eroded, in order for nutrients to be able to accumulate in the cracks and little fissures. Those nutrients can then be absorbed by the tree through its roots, but the concentration of nutrients on the outside should be high enough, otherwise the nutrients won't diffuse through the root hair membrame into the root itself (because the concentration difference would be non-existent or negative). This particular rock doesn't seem to be eroded enough to gather lots of nutrients and so it won't be able to support trees.
And all of this doesn't really matter, since, as DOC_ rightfully pointed out, this is just a render of a set of polygones coated with textures for a fantasy game. I couldn't resist the temptation to answer however, because I study biology and every now and then I need to prove to myself that my aquired (biological) knowledge is worth something (other than earning that darn paper):)

The concentration can be negative, a la active uptake, plants absorb nutrients against the concentration gradient. However a rock still is not usually a viable way for a tree to grow. :P

That is true, although it's usually not needed, because the nutrient concentration in the root is normally pretty low. The concentration at the top of the tree, however, is maintained at a high level, so the water in the xylem (nutrient/water transport vessels) is forced upwards by osmosis (although you probably already knew this :) ).
But that's enough biology for today, I still have a whole day of neurobiology and plants diversity on the menu for tomorrow ;)

Well I'm at my 8th grade in "folkeskole". That's what you'll call "secondary school" I believe (In Denmark Primary school and Secondary school are tied together... kinda).

I'm not that good at Biology and it hasn't captured me that much, but it can be really interesting, I agree. :P

There is a bit time to learn yeah... but suddenly BOOM! and the examination is there! :P

I'm doing the exams on 30th May and 20th June. :(

Haha, don't worry, you'll get there. I mean you've got time, I've got knowledge. I know which of the two I'd like to have. Actually, when I went to college for the first time, I felt stupid too. Not because I didn't understand, but because I then realized for the first time what a lazy son of a b*tch I had been at secondary school. For it turned out that what should have been just repetition to me, seemed as if I heard it then for the first time.
