Green Light…

Continuing the Green Light topic.

We’ve got the answer from VALVe and it disproved our fears. But today the situation suddenly has been topsy-turned.

VALVe took a decision as sudden as the declaration of war with the Soviet Union in 1941. What do we mean?

Well, the Green Light system suddenly became paid. If you want to take part in it, you should give 100 dollars! Never mind; it is just an idiocy, which affects many corporations.

Of course, such a contribution is different from participating in financial pyramids, but the risk is almost the same. If the project doesn’t get needed amount of votes or if VALVe doesn’t like it, it will disappear from Green Light – with your money, of course. Leave everything to chance. Isn’t it absurd for a free-to-play game?

Well, no matter… Maybe they should change the banner of Green Light. “Help us earn more money” instead of “Help pick the next games”. In our opinion, 100 dollars are a big sum because the risk is great.

What about Hatch 18 – will it become a free-to-play game? Maybe not the Steam Edition but the Torrent one! Just kidding. It will remain a mod, and in case we want to distribute it via Steam, we will have a lot of “pain in the rear”.

P.S. After all, we’re curious about the honesty of Green Light – what to do with the projects which have been registered earlier, before any payments? A rhetorical question…

I think they made it because lots of people created pages even though they don't have rights to the game or aren't taking it seriously, so it's not Valves fault, they wanted to make it free, but it's the fault of those spammers and trolls.

And I'm also pretty sure that projects that have been on before the fee will stay on, but they won't be able to put new ones up.
Also the fee must only be paid once, so you could put up every single one of your Mods or even better, there should be one moddb account uploading the best mods if they have permission of the creators ;)

I think I agree with you… Of course, appearance of the trolls who tried to post Half-Life 3, Mass Effect 3 and even a game about Gabe Newell’s flying head, has played its part.

On the other hand, they could avoid it at the beginning, without any fees. A simple pre-moderation, like on ModDB, could help to drop the bad games out and didn’t take a lot of time. This is an old, time-proved system – why didn’t they use it in Green Light? I don’t think they have a few moderators to check up the new games.

And the last point. Green Light fees are not the best way to collect money for charity, in my opinion. Doesn’t VALVe like adding “hats” to the TF2 store? A new useless item every month, and lots of gamers buy this rubbish for real money! So, why can’t they give 1/3 or even ½ of the profit from selling Team Fortress hats if they want to look like Mother Teresa? It would be much more effective.

yes man you are right why money from buy hats go to valve and why money from modmakers and cooperate works go to charity and where it is silent ...

Really, why not? 5-6 or even more items are added to TF2 store every month, and somehow people buy them. So, the profit is more expected than in the case with Green Light (who knows if the modmakers pay 100$ for such a risk), and can be given as charity...

All in all, to count somebody else's money is not our business.

Maybe they use the money made from Green Light for charity to avoid it being for them a profit and a blame from their community? I agree 100$ is too much expensive to have the right to publish your work on Steam (considering some development crews were just making their games in their free time), but at least they made it so your work won't get published by another one. Still, since the moderation on ModDB seems to work right, they should have hired moderators instead of putting up this fee.

they joke? why we must pay for what would have been our fashion and so we bought their games that would work on projects as they now have more and pay for the green light ....and mod will or not remains an open question

I'm sorry to say but your statement is kinda idiotic. Valve may be the last big company to care for their community, to propose games at affordable prices on their platform, and to even propose free DLC for their games, which any other big company such as EA or Activision will never make. I also believe they don't charge other developers when they want to update their games on their platform, unlike Sony or Microsoft (check out the whole Fez fix update affair Kotaku.com ).

Its the communities fault for putting **** up, and by far not everyone is bitching about 100 bucks, just because there wont be no crap mods doesnt mean Valve steals your cash.
