At first it started because it was considered a harmless recreationnal pastime. But soon after consumption boomed, which generated lots of byproducts,fibers and pulp, the scale of which allowed for a more and more viable alternative to paper from wood and a whole new range of textiles. Generating money for research, newer and tastier seeds were developped in parralel with research on effect of majiuana. And later bioplastic and oil, and also some illegal drugs.
