the Russians had excellent design ideas and the kv-1 was in the early days a beast of a tank, but i seems most people only look at the very end of the war, the Russians made the distinct choice to make tanks as quick and as much as possible, and you can see that, but dont say that their armor sucks, because its simply not true. the panther is a shameless idea steal from the t-34, and it payed off for the Germans.
The panther was made to counter the T-34's
