Edain Unchained is a Submod for Edain Mod. The submod adds Harad as a new playable faction. There are also many new maps, models and mechanics. You can now also choose between Arnor and Gondor.

Greetings fellow Edain Unchained Fans!

We are looking back at a – in our opinion – great first year of the Edain Unchained Submod. After the big release of Harad and another version which made the Submod compatible with Edain Mod 4.6 we have now released 2.1 as a new version. So let’s talk about the most important changes:

1. A complete overhaul of Misty Mountains
Not a single unit or hero of this fantastic and new faction was left untouched. For some it was just some adjustments for the unit’s stats like the Moria Swords and Archers, others got new abilities like the orcs from the settlements and others got completely new concepts like the great beasts which were changed to a very special kind of troll. Ramtroll:


As the great beast were already part of the Harad faction we had to come up with an alternative unit that fulfils the role of a cheap building destroyer. So we designed this troll unit that can’t fight in melee and carries a huge stone on his head, which he will then use to deal significant damage to a building in one huge suicidal leap. Inspired by a kind of meme worthy scene in the third Hobbit movie we thought that this was a funny but unique unit to implement in the game.

Wyrm:

As we were all not very happy of the wyrm as another fire spitting monster that deal a huge amount of damage to units and buildings, we wanted to stress the importance of the tunnel system for the faction we completely changed the concept of the spell. Now you can summon a huge wyrm that knockbacks units very close to it and creates a tunnel out of which the hordes of orcs can be unleashed on the enemy – to make this feel stronger you can now move ten battalions through the tunnel system at the same time and the units that charge out of the wyrm’s tunnel knock back their enemies with each attack for some time. So beware of the even more mobile and murderous armies commanded by Bolg.

Smaug:


Two other things we weren’t the biggest fans of were on the one hand the player being able of regularly recruiting Smaug the Terrible – the biggest Dragon on living memory who would serve no one but himself – and on the other hand having an outpost from which you can only recruit a single unit. So first of all we replaced the “Beast of the Ered Mithrien” Spell with the Spell “Smaug the Golden”, as it feels more natural to only get such a strong hero through the Spellbook. Next to a slightly changed model, he also got stronger stats and some new abilities.

Mountain Outpost:

Now you can’t just recruit the Mountain Giants in the outpost but also the two different types of dragons and another new unit: Stone Giants which take significantly less damage from enemy archers. You can upgrade the outpost with different upgrades that allow you to recruit dragons and stone giants and to use the feared dragon strike ability that used to be available with the old level 10 Power on the left side of the Spellbook. Furthermore, you can also research upgrades in the outpost that buff your monster units, which makes them better usable in the late game and makes your enemies fear what you can summon in the depth.

2. Visual Overhaul of Gondor

As you could previously already see on our Moddb page every Gondor building and unit got a new model to spice up the graphics a little bit.

3. A first version of a Harad AI
After a long time without a Harad AI we now managed to create a first version of a Harad AI, so you can now experience playing against it even when you just play single player. However, it is not super far developed yet, as none of us had any idea how to do something like that and it is a slow learning process. But it will be further improved in future version; so stay tuned.

4. Smaller adjustments for all the other factions
Obviously, we didn’t completely forget about the other factions and gave our love only to Gondor and Misty Mountains. For more detailed information take a look at the patch notes linked above.

The Worms! Nice! I completely agree, the fire spitting ones feel just lazy, we already have dragons for that, this is a much better choice. Thank you for the hard work!
