News From The Workshop
This is a deep rework of the vanilla BF2 BTR90. It's one of the most difficult BF2 vehicles that I've worked on, not just because of all the inaccuracies in the original model but also because the textures were applied to the mesh in very strange ways!
This meant that I had to do a huge amount of correction work in BFMeshView in order to bring my redux version of the BTR90 closer to the real thing.
Working from photographic reference, I shifted various components of the mesh into positions that more closely corresponded to what you'd see on a real BTR90.
I also deleted many of the 'fantasy' components that Dice added.
I had to make many adjustments in order to get the textures to fit the model correctly.
On the original model texture distortion isn't really visible because the skin is so generic and blurry. But when you start adding finer details all of the defects become very apparent.
N.B. Dear rivet counters, this is not a 100% accurate model of the real vehicle but simply the best I could do with the materials that I had available. In order to create a more accurate representation of the BTR90, it'd be necessary to make a completely new model. And I have neither the tools nor skills at present to do so.
The best way to illustrate the difference between the original BF2 BTR90 and my redux version is with some before and after screenshots taken directly from BFMeshView.
I love the challenge of exploring what can be done with Dice's old models! There is still so much work that can be done on BF2, and even after all these years it still has so much potential.
All it takes is imagination, patience and hard work.
If you like what you see, and would like to start repainting and reviving BF2 objects please feel free to ask for advice.

I found it weird once I found out that the BTR-90 uses BMP-2 turret, because in the vanilla game, fire rate was so slow compared to what the actual BMP-2's turret fired.
Not to mention, why DICE kept on adding BTR-90 as Russian Ground Force's mainstay IFV even after BF2, as seen in BF3 and BF4 (exception to Bad Company series where it's the BRMD-3 instead). Not a single BF games where BTR-80 was used, quite ironic.
Anyways irl lore aside, your works seems really neat and exquisite. Thanks for the updates!
Thanks Sooryan.
Who knows why Dice chose the BTR90, but I don't think that they ever looked at the blueprints!
The model has a glaring fault if you look rearwards in 1st person perspective. The whole left hand side exhaust is missing from the 1p model!
I only noticed it whilst I was working on it. It was like that in the original game. ðĪŠ
Bravo DICE XD
BTR-90 is looking really good!
I didn't know you could use the BFmeshview to move parts of the mesh. How do you do that?
Thanks, I'll send you a pm about how to manipulate the mesh in BFmeshview. :-)
You can MOVE PARTS in meshview aside from just deleting em? Omg teach me as well
Okay, I'll send you the tutorial that I sent to General Bradley. :-)
Damn amazing work man!
Thanks mate. :-)
Like the new texture. The paint chipping looks great! ð
Thanks. It's a new technique that I developed which enables me to apply random looking chipping comparatively quickly, although it's still a bit tedious at times. It's the shine on the alpha channel that really brings it to life.
How's the navmeshing project going? I could really do with a simple tutorial from you as I feel that my lack of skill in this area is really holding me back.
:-)
Somehow i totaly missed this article - awesome work man, really love your style of texturing man! keep it up buddy! =)
Thanks! :-)
Incredible work, please keep it up!
PS Where I can find a copy of BF2? It's not in the EA or Steam catalog any more...
Thanks!
Yeah, it's crazy that BF2 isn't available on Steam any more. Luckily I bought it there years ago and can still download it/repair it if I need to.
If you hunt around on the internet you'll find copies to download. I've checked a few of them in the past and the versions that I've tried have all been fine.
Here's an example that I haven't tried, so check it carefully if you download. You can download the .zip or the torrent: Archive.org
Here's another possible source: Steamunlocked.net
When I have a faster internet connection I'll upload a copy to my Google Drive, then I can easily share it with anyone like yourself who can't easily get hold of a copy.
