THE ATTRITION MOD
In this mod of Duke Nukem 3D, Duke has a large variety of weapons and gadgets that upgrade as he uses them. As you progress through the game, you will encounter more powerful monsters to match your increased firepower. Based on the popular Duke Plus mod, War of Attrition incorporates many of the same features (including improved monster AI, bot allies, mirrored levels, damage effects, and more). Attrition also comes with over 100 high quality fan made levels and several game modes. Addictive with lots of replay value, Attrition showcases some of the best levels ever made for Duke 3D, adding new gameplay but keeping the essence of the original game intact.
INSTALL
Extract the contents of attrition.rar to a folder that contains an Atomic Edition copy of DUKE3D.GRP, and then use attrition.bat to start a game.
SELECT AN EPISODE
Episode 1 consists of a large number of high quality fan made levels. There are about 120 available in the pool, some of which will be randomly selected. After the player’s score reaches a certain number, a final boss level will complete the episode. Duke’s weapons and ammo are taken away after each mission, because these maps were intended to be played that way.
Episode 2 (High Score Challenge) is similar to the random missions episode except that it keeps going until the player dies (there is no final mission). At that point, if you got a high score it will be saved. You can reload your saved game from before you died and attempt to replace your score with a higher one (multiple scores from the same game are not allowed).
Episode 3 consists of the original 3DR levels from Hollywood Holocaust all the way to The Queen.
Episode 4 is War of Attrition mode. Fight your way through wave after wave of enemies in a series of deathmatch maps. There are no puzzles here, just pure action. Can you survive the onslaught?
SPECIAL KEYS
For this mod, you need to assign keys or buttons to ALTFIRE and ATTRITION MENU. You should also assign a key for QUICK PIPEBOME. Use the keyboard and mouse setup menus in EDuke32 to do this.
ATTRITION MENU
The menu can be accessed once a game is started, and has the following selections:
RESTART MISSION --restarts the current level. You will have all the upgrades you had when the level began.
ABORT MISSION – will end the current mission and start a new randomly selected one. Can be used a limited number of times per game; available in a random missions episode or the high score challenge. It allows you to keep any perks, upgrades and experience you have acquired.
UPGRADES –shows the upgrades and perks you have acquired
HIGH SCORES –shows high scores you have achieved in the High Score Challenge.
AUTOSAVE ON/OFF – when on, this feature will periodically save the game for you in slot 10
MIRRORING RANDOM/NO – when on random, 50% of the levels will be mirrored, on NO none are. Mirroring can cause glitches, so it is off by default.
BUY PERKS – a submenu for purchasing game-changing abilities, using the perk points you have earned from leveling up your character and weapons.
See included documentation for more information.
is the attached eduke32.exe of special importance here or can i just use the current version off the official site?
The one included is the most recent build, which was created on September 17th, 2016. If you go to the official website and download the latest, you get the same revision...but I'm not sure if it's the 32-bit build or the 64-bit build (I included the 64bit build). Future builds should work fine, but sometimes they do break things.
thanks
I highly recommend you use the one provided with the Mod. Always do that.
This mod is my favorite Duke Nukem 3D Mod.I love ur work and updates man!
DeeperThought, I got two questions regarding War of Attrition;
1. There's still a "attrition.bat", I took a look at it and it only does "-game_dir attrition -cachesize 131072", the rest is just messages. Is it actually necessary to use this? And what does -cachesize do exactly for the game, improve performance or/and stability?
2. I'm very sure I remember reading in the documentation that "War of Attrition" should be played with Polymer and without the HD Pack or so.
I'm actually still confused, I can understand why no "HD Pack", but what was the renderer that is best played with? Polymer, Polymost or Classic?
1. You do NOT need to use the .bat to start the game. Just make sure that when you run eduke32.exe, on the dropdown menu in the lower half of the window, you have attrition selected as the custom game content directory. The cachesize command is for increasing the memory allocated to the game, which at one time was good for performance. I'm not sure if that applies any more.
2. Polymost is by far the best renderer to use. Classic is not good at all -- there will be lots of glitches, missing sprites/textures/models. Polymer will look good with dynamic lights but probably run very poorly. It depends on the size of the level.
Here I have a little feedback :)
Nothing critical, but still...
1) ATTHUD.CON, LINE 3684: "ifvarl VOLUME 4" to "ifvarl VOLUME 5", because since v2.0 there are 4 (instead of 3) episodes to pick a random map from. This may cause a little bug: if we will random a map from the episode 5, game won't show the message "MISSIONS COMPLETED: %VALUE%".
1) ATTHUD.CON, LINE 3687: "digitalnumberz 2837 100 10 truelevel 0 102 256 0 0 xdim ydim 40960", x-coord better be 115 than 100 (for me, 100 causes overlapping of two captions, I play fullscreen, 1280x720).
3) I'm not sure about this, but still: <truelevel> gamevar doesn't represent the "MISSIONS COMPLETED" value correctly; after I start a new game, and the first playable level is loaded but NOT COMPLETED, the message shows up: "MISSIONS COMPLETED: 1" (while I expect "0"), because first playable level was loaded after "dummy" start.map and technically is the second level. Maybe display a "subvar truelevel 1" instead of actual value?
4) 5th episode (volume 4) has no start.map; also the 8th map of 5th episode (WGS3.map) is defined twice, here and: definelevelname 0 20 attmaps/WGS3.map.
Sorry if I post this in the wrong place. Thx for your many years of work for Duke Nukem!
Can you still play the Metropolitan Mayhem campaign with 2.0?

Will there be anymore work done to this mod or so 2.0 the final version? This is a badass mod and would like to see more done with it!
Does this work with Steam's Megaton Edition???
Yes, but not sure about the 20th Anniversary Edition
Oh, awesome, i dont have the 20th anniversary ed anyway.
It has been reported in the Duke4 forums already but just so you know I get this problem too.
I get tabbed out of the game by an error message saying "Line 2505, hitscan: divide by zero" on random occasions. Sometimes I can't get back to the game as EDuke32 locks the mouse cursor in the center of the screen, preventing me from clicking OK.
This happens on newer EDuke32 builds.
So, is it recommended to just use the port that comes with the mod then?
Because I am using a very recent 64-bit version of EDuke32 and also coming across this horridly annoying bug....
Also, I've noticed it only happens when clones expire/explode whether by perk or upgraded Expander(at least, from my own experiences).
so i downloaded this and everything i turn it on but the game is glitchy it doesnt seem to give me the menu after the loading screen it goes straight to a game mode but like everything is blurry and when i click ESC to look at the menu i hear it pop up but it doesnt show up what do i do

I wish there was an endless mode where you kept your weapons after each level. I'd love to see how overpowered all your weapons can get in one run. Hopefully this mod gets worked on in the future. No other Duke 3D mod has been as good yet
