Why does version 2.0 keep crashing on me? (was trying to save at time of last crash.)

more specifically, I was in the hallway from the theater to the lobby at the time. I also got crashes in the arcade and the rooftop at the start of the game.
another update - the crashes referred to above occurred with the in opengl mode; it crashed today at the E1L1 exit in classic mode
All crashes occurred while trying to save.
And I had several successful saves before today's crash.
as of 5/23/2023, I think I have figured out what was causing the crashes - voxels and models were both activated by default. I deactivated models and the crashes are gone.
