With the release of UT2004, DEEP is back in action. Progress will be slow without help, but UT2004 has most functions included that DEEP needs. The Raptor and the Turrets are perfect as bases for some of DEEP's primary gameplay.

In the distant future , Ore and Mineral companies deplete entire planetary deposits of rare ore and minerals within years . Planets found to be unsuitable for colonization are bid for , and mined of their resources . Hundred's of planets in various systems now drift the galaxy , gutted by massive tunneled shafts and huge open mines , littered with the remains of abandoned equipment , and scarred by radiation pockets left by the mining processes .

Prospectors roam huge underground and open mining complexes in the search of remnant minerals , precious stones and metals left behind or uncovered after a planet's resources are diminished to the extent that further large scale mining is no longer prosperous . The mines are abandoned , leaving the planet's remains for man and beast alike , to find shelter , wealth or food .

Gameplay Elements

Active mine planets.
Stockpiles and open veins of precious metals exist in active mine planets , however any ships attempting to land without clearance end up as scrap metal , with areas well guarded by automated weapon turrets to shoot down unidentified craft . Identification chips are installed on all ships and machinery working on the active mine . Sometimes it is known that inside contacts sell these id chips at a very high price . Unfortunately , id code is periodically changed system wide , and there is a high risk of being detected while on or beneath the surface . With only the slightest of chance to escape should the player risk the opportunity , they may be shot down by the automated guard turrets , or attacked by security bots patrolling the planet .
Active planets have another attraction for intergalactic scavengers . The remains of those who couldn't resist the lure of instant wealth , lay scattered on the planets surface nearby the auto turrets and mine entrance's . These contain a lesser reward , with also less risk . Tools , fuel , energy pods and whatever cargo they had at the time , are all recoverable in these conditions . Best done on foot , with the ship parked a safe distance from the guard turrets .

Stations.
Mines have several control stations, used to interconnect mining operations across the planet during extraction. These are places of interest for the player to explore, and are usually areas that need to be found to activate power for a particular objective (e.g. Restart generator in section 04 to allow access to section 05 through large hatchway.) These areas will provide a ' human ' feel in that they should feel ' lived in ‘. There are offices, docking bays, minor processing bays, crew living sections, etc. Planet's abandoned for long periods usually have local creatures living inside these control station complexes.
