Hero Editor Version 1.04 - Final - This Popular Editor works for Diablo II character files, up to version 1.14d.
Hero Editor Version 1.04 - Final
INSTALLATION Vista, Win7, Win8, Win10.
1) Download and extract the zip install files to a folder on your desktop.
2) Right click on Setup.exe and select -> Run as Administrator.
This step is important for installing the vb6 runtime files, needed for the program.
3) Find Hero Editor shortcut. Right click and select Properties, then click the compatibility tab.
Set compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
Set Run this program as administrator.
Click OK to close.
INSTALLATION and USAGE XP, Win2K:
1) If you are using Windows 2000, NT, or XP, then make sure you have Administrator rights when you install Hero Editor. If you are the only user of your computer, then probably already have Administrator rights. Also, make sure that you have installed all patches to your operating system. If not, you will probably get errors about not having various windows files installed correctly, or that you cannot copy files, such as the Setup.LST file.
2) After you have installed and started Hero Editor, press and release the F1 key, and a Help file will pop up that will give you a description about how to use some of the features of Hero Editor.
3) Hero Editor usually requires that you are using an English version of Windows and your computer is set for single byte letters/Unicode, NOT multiple byte letters/UniCode. (NOTE: I have never had this problem, but others tell me this solved the problem for them.) From your Control Panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel) run Regional Settings, look for something about Unicode. Make sure the Unicode setting is for single bytes and that you have the language setting for English (in both the Regional Options tab, and the Advanced tab). If using WinXP, it might also help to right-click on Hero Editor.exe, select Properties, and in the Compatibility tab, select Windows 95 mode. If set incorrectly, you will probably get error messages such as "unknown stat found: 21".
4) If pictures don't seem to line up properly, you probably need to set your screen to use Small Fonts.
5) Make sure you have your screen resolution set to at least 800x600, or you won't see the buttons at the bottom of Hero Editor.

Addendum:
Diablo II 1.14 patch
Blizzard changed the default save game path in 1.14 patch versions to:
C:\Users\(my user name)\Saved Games\Diablo II
Search there for your character save game files
does not work for 1,14d
Yes it works for 1.14d, be sure to set
"item decode"
to
1.10-1.13
Under the "Description" display panel, is "Item Decode". Below that is the change button. Use the change button if it's needed.
Where is that "Description Panel"? I browsed everything didn't find anything. Thx.
sorry i missed the post.
click on inventory then look to the top right half of the screen is "Description panel". Below that in the lower right corner of the screen is where Item Decode option is displayed.
When loading a brand new (necromancer) character file from 1.14d, I get an ERROR window with the following message.
"Item Code (`sc) not found."
Clicking "OK" gives me the following error.
"Trying to process item with unknown format.
This item will be deleted from character inventory.
WARNING: There may still be corrupt items in your inventory.
In options tab, select "Complete Checking (slower loading, but safer)',
and try loading this file again."
The complete checking is set in options, and the item it seems to remove is the starting wand. Is there a problem?
Update: In fact, the program failed to create a basic wand with +1 raise skeleton on it, and pops up similar errors when trying to use the item editor. I've ensured that "item decode" is set to 1.10-1.13, and it was by default. In fact, everything is set how it is apparently supposed to be.
I'm running windows 8.1, and have successfully used Hero Editor 1.04 with the previous version of Diablo with no problems.
Update 2: Nevermind, I found the solution. I had forgot that my PC region was temporarily set to Japanese (to play some Japanese games), even though the language was set to English. Changed it back and now it works fine. Sorry for missing that. ^-^"
I just downloaded this and it is telling me that it cant find any character files... what should I do?
It actually says it cant find diablo 2 on my computer and to please try to find my character manually
am also having this issue, any resolutions?
(currently running the most recent windows)
need to go to where your saves are, usually in C:\users\"YOU"\savedgames\diablo II
you're on the wrong folder for char files.. its under users/{yourname}/saved games/diabloII
You'll have to follow the path C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\Diablo II and select the character from there. The "USERNAME" will be your username on the computer.
It's because blizzard changed the default save path in patch v1.14 to:
C:\Users\(my user name)\Saved Games\Diablo II
So how dowe fix that
Can be fixed with regedit, if you know how to use that.
Us.battle.net
A bit late but I've since found the fix. Seems hero editor is looking for a registry value for "Save Path" but the new blizzard installer doesn't install this value. Fix instructions are:
1. Open Regedit as admin
2. Browse to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II
3. Add a new value (String Value).
4. Call it "Save Path" and set the value to the location your save files are in eg C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\Diablo II
dude thanks. i managed to find it. although in my case there was already a save path and it was labeled new save path. i still did add another string and copy pasted the value from new save path has C:\Users\x\Saved Games\Diablo II\ and it worked. Again many thanks - from someone who isnt tech savvy.
BOA, Deu certo.
Is it possible to run this on a macbook?
Hero Editor is a VB6 app. Works only in windows, as far as I know.
For mac users, you can try GoMuleX. However, it's not a character editor .. it's a muling application written in java.
Moddb.com
I'm having trouble saving characters...it gives me a error message about being unable to delete original char file...any advice?
right click hero editor shortcut, select properties-->compatibility tab
enable compatibility mode for windows 95
enable run as administrator
=)
Still nothing for Mac users?

So I'm not sure what to do. I just downloaded diablo 2 from blizzard, and I have version 1.14. I'm trying to use hero editor for single player mode. Every time I press open on hero editor, it tells me that it cant find my diablo game. From the research that I have done, I think it has to do with the save file? I think before the patch the save file was C:\Program File (x86)\Diablo II\save\ .After the patch it got changed to C:\Users\charles\Saved Games\Diablo II\. Well I have gone into regedit under NewSavePath and I have changed the code to the first one. After I do this, I go back into the game, and I have tried making a new character and saving it. As soon as I do, the code changes right back to C:\Users\charles\Saved Games\Diablo II\. And hero editor cant find my game or my character. What am I doing wrong? Would it be easier to find a older version of diablo and download that one? If I do that, will I have a hard time with it finding my characters if it gets patched to the new version?
Possibly you need to give Hero Editor Admin permissions to view the files where 1.14 puts them.
This comment is currently awaiting admin approval, join now to view.
When i'm trying to import item, it tells me that cannot find D2 on this computer and program can't see any items that i have in files. What can i do ?
Edit: Nevermind, it actually works. After you get error, just go into the location of your item and you still be able to import them.
yes.. already discussed above this post. 1.14 moves default location of save game.
hey.. are there also maphack? I can't find it :(
not that I'm aware of
The only characters my Hero Editor can find are from v1.07 when I'm using v1.14. New characters I create are also at v1.07. Suggestions?
be sure to set
"item decode"
to
1.10-1.13
And where can we do this?
Read post #4 (above)

can someone help me... i cant run the program, everytime i try to run it there always window showing this message
Class not registered
You need the following file to be installed on your machine.
MSSTDFMT.DLL.
i not really understand about it.... hope for your guide....
This is an old program written in VB6 for XP. You may search google for VB6 issues relating to your Operating System version. Works fine for me in Windows 7 and previous versions of windows.
These are some suggestions you can try.
-Run the application in XP compatibility mode
-Check to see if your OS has VB6 runtime file installed.
-Allow program to run with admin permissions.
how to check if i have VB6 or not??? sorry if im too much asking, im not understand about software whatsoever....
Search google for VB6 runtime files then install them.
You obviously don't have them installed, or you're running with very limited user privileges.
so im finding it impossible to use this editor no matter what ive done the editor cannot find my diablo files on my computer at all... any help would be really appreciated.
Question has been answered before, Read the comment section.
1.14 moved the default save game path for diablo II.
hi,
i used this program just to uncheck "Akara has Reset Stat/Skill Points" in normal.
now i can't access act5 normal anymore in the game, because i can't hit the tab "V" in the waypoint-menu.
why is that? any idea how to fix or avoid it?
still have the original char-file.
edit:
game-version is 1.13, hero-edit-version is 1.04.
found a work-arround by creating token of absolution.
thanks.
Quests have a myriad of flags set before you can advance to the next act waypoint.
All I can say is be careful. It takes a bit of playing around before you know what you can get away with to partially reset some of the Quest Flags. I've borked characters this way myself, but always managed to be able to undo changes & make it work again.
I never need to reset respec with HeroEditor or use token, since I coded infinite respec into the game.
I'm getting a invalid command line error, when I try to install
Helps if you post your operating system version.
I'm guessing windoze 10. Try installing VB6 runtime files.
Does anyone know what the COMPLETE item pack is called or where to find it? There used to be a pack with all items including RuneWords, Uniques, etc. I have found "KingPintz item pack" but it's massively, massively incomplete.
My own collection may be equal, But it would take months to go through 27,000+ items and toss out about half of them.
Updated Description with a link to download Visual Basic 6 runtime files from microsoft, and instructions how to install.
