Part of the French colonial troops since 1857, such troops took part in the conquest of Madagascar (1895-1905) and the pacification of Morocco.
In the First World War, about 200.000 Senegalese fought under the French flag, these being part of the troops of French West Africa.
- 135.000 were sent to Europe, where 15% of them died (approximately 30.000) and many returned injured or disabled.
