Project Zomboid

Early access game review

Project Zomboid is the survival game you've dreamed of. Hunger, thrust, stamina, zombies... death. You will die, it's just a matter of when - but don't let this stop you from playing!

For a pittance of $8, you can enter a world filled with terror and hostility in an attempt to survive.

Goodfolks

Game review

Goodfolks is very similiar to its predecessor entitled Family Farm. In fact, it's so similiar that the textures/animations/audio are all the same. Thankfully, enough has changed to turn it into another game.

Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to renew a long-lost village I've decided to dub "Longtown." However it seems less like renewing a village and more running a farm in Family Farm, just, without the scenario ending once you complete the tasks (THANK GOODNESS!). Unnamed Settlers will arrive without any real reason (Their car broke down, or they got lost hiking, I guess) once your Happiness reaches a certian level. You increase happiness by your citizens eating quality foods, and you create quality foods from a variety of food-stuffs you plant and harvest in addition to animal goods.

The game was obviously designed with tablet play in mind, as "Longtown" is aptly named such as you navigate the town by swiping your mouse left-and-right. Everything that should say "click" instead says "tap" and all actions are completed with a single left-click only.

There is no storyline to speak of aside from renewing the town, which makes the game lose its grip on you eventually. It's a fun game, great even! But the lack of any real "goal" except completing the small missions that are presented is unfulfilling.

The game is nothing like Harvest Moon, so don't think that. You don't control a single character, you don't control anywhere outside of the town, you don't do any type of "events" or follow a storyline - nothing like that. The best way to describe Goodfolks is Zynga's FarmVille, lacking energy and the need to annoy your friends. So, that's a good thing.

Aside from the lack of any real goal and the obvious fact that it's a tablet made game, it is still a fun game. If you want a casual, non-violent, goal based game - this is it. I very much enjoy it.

Xenonauts

Game review

This gets a big golden 10.0 from me. As an avid X-Com player, I've always been looking for a more "up to date" remake - slowly they're cropping up, but Xenonauts is the best one I've played to date.

The graphics are astonishing and give off a very crisp and inviting feel. The extreme detail is quite clear when you're navigating the menus and looking at briefings or alerts.

It's unfair to "compare" Xenonauts to X-Com. Sure it takes the same formula, but so far in this alpha state, Xenonauts is already breaking away from the tried and true and giving you a new, refreshing isometric tactical simulator to date. I am sure we will all be blown away when the game gets the rest of its needed tweaks and becomes a full fledged game to play (Not that you can't do that already!)

Towns

Game review

Combine Dwarf Fortress's complex and addictive personality with Dungeon Keeper's appealing graphics and isometric command structure and what do you get?

Surprizingly, not a game that also has two words. In fact, reduced to just one: Towns.
Odd, because you only ever build one Town. So the game is a lie. But don't let that 's' stop you from picking up this gem.

You objective is whatever you set out for yourself. The game, albiet not yet complete, will eventually have you developing and running a Town that will cater to the needs of adventuring Heroes looking for glory and riches. Currently, you can build up the town, and with the latest patch, simple Heroes will finally visit your establishment!

Sadly, Towns is a long way from completion. The SMP team is working very hard and actually listens to player suggestions, so being active on their Forums is a plus if you have something to say! By no means should the game be judged in its current state, but if you were to do so, I do believe you will be pleasantly impressed by the progress so far (Especially for Dwarf Fortress fans!).

Pick this one up!
