Hi!
I had the same problem with some game i've played before. The solution is you MUST find a config file and open it by notepad then edit it.
Ex. for STLAKER game, you go to "My document\" then STALKER - CoP folder then open file name :"user.ltx" and open it by Notepad
Next, you find the line have words relative graphics setting as "sun", "shadow", "resolution",.... and edit it to average value (resolution should less than your desktop res support ~1024x768) Now save and try restart game...
