That's correct, this error has to do with playerInteractions being used, which is a newer feature from 227J that is absent from 227I, you can download the 227J patch from the oldunreal site under the downloads section :)

That sequence is unfortunately bugged, you can ignore him and continue on to the underground pyramid alone. He is supposed to take shelter in the temple ruins telling you to go ahead by yourself. But as it stands now, he'll just freeze outside the ruins after you saved him from the Krall ambush :\

Unfortunately as of this moment unlikely to happen, as the UT 469 community patch features are quite different then the Ugold 227 community patch features used in The One. Maybe somewhere in the future when both patches reach a state of parity an UT version could be built.
Yeah my apologies for the somewhat steep difficulty of the mod, perhaps in an update I might adjust a few things to make it (much) easier to navigate, still considering the possibilities of that.
Great to see Ashes 2063 and Phobos in there, the terrific level design in both of these completely blew me away! Will have to check out the others from your list some time :)

Personally, I'm a bit out of the loop regarding all the latest Unreal community mods, but The One was heavily inspired by some very old community maps of last century, as far as atmosphere and level design goes I'd recommend these: Tower of Shrakith'a, One Day, Tashara's Cove, Nali Cove, Hollow. And as far as newer maps go, the Savage Lands Demo was pretty great IMO.
I might consider doing that when I'll do an update, but I'm not entirely sure if it could break any stuff, since while the cutscenes are playing a lot of background stuff is put in place in the map.

I assume you mean the Grapple gun rope? You can break/release the grapple by holding the Fire and Alt-fire keys simultaneously. The grapple controls are:
Fire (left mouse button) to reel in
Alt-fire (right mouse button) to reel out
Fire+Alt-fire (both right mouse buttons) to stop grappling

It's not an easy campaign to navigate around I admit. I'd suggest you try to familiarize yourself with the environment a little. The island is actually quite small and the distances between each underground should be short enough that it doesn't really warrant the use of a fast-travel feature.
Also the dream totems provide some minor navigation hints if you're really lost out there :)
Have you encountered the apparition yet? If you did you should find a dispersionpistol lying around after waking up.
227I is not the final release, it is the latest publicly available version though.

Apologies for that error, there is no download yet, not until there is a public 227J release.
I haven't checked the latest UE yet, but if it provides a Mutator to replace weapons/monsters in custom maps it should work.
They are beta-testing so I heard, therefore I presume it's getting close, it won’t be another 6 years ;)
Hopefully not, since it's already 99% done and playable.
I'm just waiting for oldunreal's 227j patch to come out as this relies on features from that version.
