Garvest Boon

Game review

The game is incredibly lackluster. You can barely do anything. It is nothing but tedium. The art is just stolen from a bunch of other games. The sound effects are obnoxious. Glitches and bad design everywhere. Feels incredibly incomplete and not thought out at all.

Game review

The concept in this game is awesome. It's a mini-level platformer where you try to complete each stage in a limited time, collecting all the small items along your way (think something like Super Meat Boy). The jumping mechanic is fun -- instead of just a hop, you have propulsion that can run out. So you can hop when and wherever you want as long as you don't run out of steam.

It was a blast, and I did up the rating a little for the aesthetics (fun quirky chiptune music and a super cute mustached robot player character), but I had quite a few complaints.

First, the game is short. I'm not done, but there are only 20 levels according to the trailer, and I've already completed 10 in a few minutes.

There's also a bit of problems with the hazards. The spikes are too sensitive. Once, I jumped near them, and I wasn't even on the spikey side, and I just got close for essentially being near the edge of them. But it didn't make sense to die in that location at all. I had similar encounters later. There are these floaty blocks that kill you and the activation time seems a bit too fast for me. I like fast-paced action, but you are controlling a sluggish, floaty character (which suits this game, except for this hazard).

The menus are touch-based, as this seems to be made for mobile, but I was playing on Windows 8 and menu control with keyboard is not there. If you can do it, I couldn't find out how. You have to move your mouse all over the screen from one corner to the other to get from place to place in the menus. But, it seems like this is intended for touch-screens, so it's not that big of a deal.

There are some details that are a bit unpolished. When some icons move onto the screen in the menu, they shake awkwardly at the end of their movement. If you spend too much time in a stage (I died quite a few times from the moving blocks), eventually the music ends. It doesn't loop. Then suddenly the game is silent. And awkward sensitivity on the enemies, making you die easily.
