Maybe I'm too generous. But I think CS is just as good as it's predecessor. What it lacks in narrative it makes up for in gameplay, and has to be played a few times to really get to grips with the immersive world.
The first FPS I ever played. Fond memories. Still incredible, aided of course by the active and passionate modding community.
The best horror game I have ever played, period. The fact that this started out as a mod for the original Half-Life is almost unbelievable. Visuals may not be top-notch when compared to modern AAA titles, but for the engine, the price (none!) and the fact that it was independently developed, this game is phenomenal. Incredible atmosphere, a small arsenal of weaponry, grotesque adversaries and hours and hours of game time come together to create a terrifying psychological horror story. It's frightening, disturbing, harrowing and a game you will never forget. Exemplary!
Pure S.T.A.L.K.E.R goodness, and a worthy finishing note, if a little short. While the age of the X-Ray engine causes the occasional crack to appear, it is none the less a worthy successor. Modding will reveal this title's true potential.
