Can anyone give me a hint on how to get the hidden power-up?

Does anyone here have a method for beating Hackan (boss 5-2) perfectly? I get the basic idea -- run at him, hit him as he jumps over you, hit him as soon as he lands, but he'll randomly stab me with his sword instead of jumping sometimes, and there doesn't appear to be a great method for avoiding it, so I just have to take the hit and wait for him to jump again. Usually I get hit 2 or 3 times in every Hackan fight. How do you guys deal with this?

It seems like you also made some unannounced changes to the Boss Rush scoring... I don't seem to be losing any points on my Boss Rush score if I grab the health pack now. :)
