Raising the Bar: Redux

Early access mod review

My mind is blown at how good this is. Like... I started playing it 4 hours ago thinking I probably wouldn't keep going but I was so bloody enthralled by how great the beta City 17 is represented I just had to see more.

The weapons are perfectly modelled, the sound effects for them are so punchy and satisfying (especially when compared to the pretty weak HL2 ones.)

My heart genuinely skipped a beat when I saw a Cremator coming towards me for the first time. I've been waiting to see that guy fully implemented and in context since I was just a 14 year old kid pawing through the files of the HL2 beta by myself, getting so excited with it all.

Gman and Kleiner are perfect in their roles, though Kleiner could stand to be a little bit louder, but Barney definitely needs some work. It's not even that he isn't a soundalike, just a lot of his delivery is very lacking. I'm sure that VA could do a great second pass on these lines with a bit of extra direction.

The Metro Cops sound FANTASTIC, their voices combined with the new audio effects are just perfection. They're so ******* menacing and fit perfectly in this darker City 17.

There's a wonderful balance here between creative liberty and faithfulness to the beta, if nothing else the aesthetic has been completely nailed.

My one and only criticism is in the early level design before the lab sequence, I feel like there's a lack of obvious indicators on which way you're going because the city is very large. Some subtle indicators during the lulls between NPC activity would go a long way.

I'd love to see the citizens be a bit more vocal as well, it'd be really nice to hear them comment on their lives in this darker City 17 rather than just re-using the Hl2 lines. Honestly if you want help with that, hit me up. I'm down to write a bit of incidental dialogue!

You guys are doing amazing and I hope beyond hope that you keep this project going to completion. Even if not, these first few chapters are INCREDIBLE and I couldn't ask for more.
