I want my ten minutes back.
Hardly. if you go with option A, the check only needs to be made when a new block is placed/generated, and only for blocks that share the same horisontal coordinates. if floating islands are an issue, adjust it so it ignores blocks more than a certian distance away.
With option b, the blocks don't need to make the check at all, it's all the player.
alternatively, making clouds an entity in the game rather than background decoration, and rain occur only in areas between said cloud and a solid block, verticaly, could get around both issues. adding realistic constraints, an and preventing the islands from being an issue by ocasionaly passing under them.
Has potential, but if it's alright may i make two requests?
The menu icons are fuzzy as hell and way bigger than they need to be. It would be nice to have a way to resize them and/or clean up the fuzzyness.
The edge-scrolling is much too sensitive and seems to go off well before my mouse is at the actuall edge of the screen. a way to turn that down/off would be apreciated.
That aside, keep up the good work.
"Rain underground: When you have infinite up and down, there is no way to tell if there is something above you. Therefore, the rain cannot work 100% perfectly. We found this to be a decent compromise."
Really? I'm calling ******** on that. if the problem is coming from blocks/chunks/whatever above you that haven't generated yet, constrain it to what has been generated so far, or if you're feeling lazy just constrain it to whether the players view of the sky is currently obstructed. (assign the sprite, effect, or texture, to a particle that's not rendered if the player doesn't have line of sight with the skybox.) can you see sky? if yes rain, if no, don't render the rain.
the recipe book makes crafting too easy. half the fun of that early on in other similar games is experimenting to see what you can make and what you cant.
the spawners don't spawn anything often enough, and when they do, it's too predictable. Random encounters should be more often than that and actually be random. For that matter, don't use spawner blocks in the overworld if you can help it. they should be reserved for areas where you WANT spawning to be controlled. like a dungeon or somthing.
and there are a ton of fidly little nitpicks like: why am i getting rained on underground? why the hell does coal glow? why isn't sand effected by gravity like it is in most of the other games in this genre? Why are the UI buttons visable in the PC version when i'm not in my inventory? It's not like i can click them. etc. that just ruin the experience...
Is it possible to request a feature? some way of building walls from above would be handy, like a 'fill hole' button or somthing. I haven't found anything like that.
I think it's more that people see the simiarity and fear it won't add anything new.
