Renegade X

Game review

This game has been both entertaining and very pleasing, but it has a few flaws to it that detract from the experience, but since this is an indie game is such be judged among other indie games, and it holds up extremely well. I preferred playing on the Nod team just so I could have access to the special stealth class, since I love stealth games, but the maps usually had too thin areas where stealth was extremely difficult without running into another player. I hope to see some updates on the maps sometime soon because the graphics are actually very developed and special, especially for an indie game. There is a lot of strategy involved in this game, like which building should we destroy first? What vehicles would be best for the situation? What weapons should I buy? How do we counter the enemy team's push? I couldn't seem to find a voice communication option, so I'm pretty sure strategy would be difficult in this game, but I'm sure the teams will really shine once that option is implemented. What can I say? The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is fresh and unique and full of strategy, and there is a lot of potential for this game. The main flaws are the thin level design, the threat of hackers, and the lack of voice communication.

Slender: The Eight Pages

Game review

Slender, the classic horror game we all know and love, but is it really all that great? I had to ponder on this for a while, but I think I've come to the conclusion that, as popular as it is, it still has some flaws that get in the way of the experience. If there's one thing that Slender does best, it's atmosphere. Slender knows how to tell you danger is lurking around, and as you make progress the music becomes more irrational and odd, much like the monster that is chasing you. The feeling of being stalked is clear and fresh, and the feeling never truly goes away. The main flaws I found in Slender involve the question, is he always going to stalk me from behind? Well, yes, he only stalks from behind so at least you know where he is almost all the time. There have been instances where he appeared from the front, but those were rare. I feel like the game would be much scarier if you never knew where to expect him, like he could be hiding behind the very tree you're walking next to. I feel like just having him approach from behind kind of makes the experience more like a game of red-light green-light. Either way, Slender is a great game to try and I hope it evolves even more at some point.

One Late Night

Game review

It's rare that I give a game such a high rating, but I have to say, Slender never terrified me as much as this game. The atmosphere brought so many questions. Was that knocking noise the monster about to break in and chase me? What does the music mean and why has it suddenly turned bleak, does that mean the monster is close? The biggest question this game gave me is probably one of the most effective impacts it had on me: when will the monster come back? That simple question was enough to drive me crazy with fear and always kept me on edge. Slender never had as much of an impact on me as One Late Night did, I still felt that cold rush of fear even after the game was over, like the monster was still waiting invisible and ready to suddenly appear. This is the kind of fear that must always appear in horror games, not just cheap jumpscares (although there are a few minor ones in this game). This is a true horror game and it deserves to be recognized as such. I hope the developer still has plans to make another game.

The Very Organized Thief

Game review

I felt like this game was a very interesting idea. It definitely made one feel like an intruder, and they helped add the tension of being one as well. I thought that it broke the immersion a little bit by adding in physics and the ability to toss things around because no human I know can lift a grandfather clock and toss it several feet away. The tension of knowing when the lady returns adds a pinch of panic to the game that increases as the threat of her returning to the house increases. I'm not sure about how the mechanics of how she is able to detect you or what rooms she enters, but I remember a time when I tried to cut out the power to the house and I ended up running into her as I left the room with the power box in it and I ran upstairs only to see her start following me all the way up and into rooms when I was certain I lost her, so either the AI was able to guess where I am or I am running from a wallhacker. Either way, this was an enjoyable game and I hope to see more from the developer.

The Cursed Forest

Game review

The Cursed Forest is probably one of the best indie horror games I've ever played. The environment shows a clear amount of effort and easily sets the mood, the monster is mysterious and creepy, and the jumpscares are very effective and bring a great deal of tension in anticipation while you play. I felt like the graphics were very impressive as well, as to be expected from the Cry engine. I was also very impressed by the length of the game, it takes over an hour to complete entirely. The only flaw I found in it that could separate it from a true horror game is that fact that it definitely has the feel of an indie game, meaning it's extremely linear and the game punishes you for not following the proper path, and there's no real goal or special mechanic other than simply collecting bones and hoping you don't get jumpscared. I have a feeling, however, that this developer has incredible potential to make this idea a true horror game with special mechanics, maybe a feature where the monster is always actively hunting you and hiding behind trees waiting to pop out if the player is not cautious enough. I definitely think that this game deserves an extremely high rating for it's outstanding display and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the developer presents next.
