Underrail

Early access game review

NOTE: This review is an update of an earlier review.

Underrail is an old school CRPG that manages to do something that most other modern games cannot: Make me want to finish the game. Through the engrossing, minimallist nature of the story so far to the entertaining (albeit unpolished) combat system, the game makes you want to see what's around the next corner, what experience you'll have next and what you'll have to do to survive in this fascinating world.

The game starts off with a conversation between three of an underground colonies main residents, as they talk about your acceptance into the colony and the recent earthquake that has caused chaos in and around the colony. From there, you wake up in your bed and are then free to explore the colony. There is a main mission of sorts, and about 10-15 side missions at the moment, most of which are to push forward the colonies goal of recovering from the recent earthquake. The story is light at the moment, yet satisfying enough to make you want the next patch to come as soon as possible once you reach the current end point.

The graphics would best be described as Fallout 2 HD. As bland and rehashed as that may sound, it is done in such a way as to not feel dull. Currently, there are some odd cut offs in the world, where the floor will simply lead to an impassable invisible wall with simple black tiles beyond it, but given that this is still early Alpha, and (I presume) most of the zones aren't even in the game yet, it is both forgivable and truly, not a big deal.

The character creation is again something you would expect from the Fallout series, with perks gained each level, as well as 45 skill points to distribute within the various and numerous skills that effect gameplay. It's quite a rewarding system, but it does need some balancing at the moment, as well as additional perks. I'm almost out of room, so lastly I'd just like to praise the dialog for being both interesting and funny.

Excited to see where it goes
