Can you play this without the steam client? I mean, just like before, where you can play on LAN with your buddies with one just setting up the server?

I'm starting to download this file now.
But, can I play it without the steam client? I mean, I have my copy of Half-Life 2 but I do not install steam or register or anything. I just wanted to play this on LAN just like Doom 3 Last Man Standing. Can anyone give me an advice? Thanks
